Exams are now upon us so this week we're going a little closer to home for a slightly shorter than usual walk amongst the forests around the village of West Tytherley. The walk will be about 17km long, and will finish with the infamous Mottisfont Bog.
For this walk we'll take the 9:30 train from ST DENYS to Dean (Wilts), for which you'll need an Off Peak Day Return which costs £4.35 with a railcard or £6.60 without. There's only one ticket machine at St Denys so please arrive... before 9.15 if you can.
You can also join us on the train to Dean at Southampton Central, at 9:37. A committee member will be at the south side of the station as normal.
It is possible to take the same train from Swaythling station, however this costs an extra £2, so is only recommended for those who live right next to it.

For our first walk of a brand new year, we're heading out to the South Downs for a new 19km walk along the coast, through the forest, and up onto the downs. We think it's the perfect opportunity to get outdoors before the exam period. Why not make walking part of your New Year's Resolutions? You know you want to.
For this walk we're meeting at Southampton Central station for the 09:13 train (arrive before 09:00 to buy your ticket!). We'll travel to Havant, and from there walk... to Rowland's Castle. You'll need an Off Peak Day Return to Rowland's Castle which costs £9.50 with a railcard or £14.40 without.
As usual, please bring along plenty of food and drink for yourself, and suitable clothing for a sunny but cold day.

Congratulations to everyone who survived the Shaftesbury walk today. Some mildly inclement weather and slightly saturated ground made for an interesting day out, though we think the pub, café and camaraderie made up for it. That's it from us this year, we look forward to seeing you all in 2019!

For our final day walk of this calendar year, we're going a bit further afield to visit the hill top town of Shaftesbury in Dorset. It's a 25km walk, slightly longer than usual, around the hills of Cranbourne Chase filled with viewpoints, quaint villages and country estates. And hills, like the one above! (artist's impression)
For this walk we will be taking a minibus rather than our usual train. We will be meeting at the university (outside the shop) at 08:30 (leaving at 08:...45), and expect to return back at an undisclosed time in the evening.
Because of the minibus, we are limited to a total of 15 people. The cost will be £7 for paid club members and £9 otherwise.
If you'd like to join us, you will need to sign up by following this link: http://walking.susu.org/signup/
Sign up goes live at 19:00 this Friday (that's 7pm, not 7am!). As usual, it will be first come, first served, so don't forget! :)

After our Santa Walk to Winchester on Saturday, we made the Union's blog! :) You can read the blog post at the link below. The post sums up the events of the day and even includes a few sheepish words from our very own President.
Huge thank you, once again, to those who participated.

So next Saturday (8th December) there will be a unofficial daywalk run by our Vice-President Eilish Hart and Social Sec Hannah Wenman from Bournemouth along the sea front and around the headland to Christchurch!
This walk is ~13km/8 miles so it is a bit of a shorter walk, so we will most likely finish earlier than our other day walks (so you will have more time to come and join us in the pub 😁)
The train we are catching is the 09:51 train from Southampton Central, arriving at... 10:20 in Bournemouth. The ticket you will need to buy is a Super Off-Peak Day Return to Bournemouth, which will cost £8.45 with a railcard and £12.80 without.
As always, please wear suitable walking shoes (trainers/walking boots), and bring a waterproof coat, lunch, snacks and water.
We hope to see you all there!
Eilish and Hannah :)
