Found staff helpful and friendly no problems getting seated only criticism some veg a little dry happy to visit again

User

Well booked a table for 20 to which they catered for as best they could, but when we arrived staff walked past us not offering any assistance until asked. We found our table and all got comfy. We ordered drinks and started to look at menu. Only to over hear from other customers there were no chips. When placing our orders we were told there was a wait of 45 mins for pizza and NO CHIPS (pretty disappointed). This then made several of us change our minds as those who wanted burgers didnt fancy roast potatoes with it so went with carvery. We waited for our pizzas etc and started to eat. Salad was ok could do with a few more items and clean replenshied bowls. Carvery turkey was slightly dry and some of the veg was hard and stuffing looked uninviting. Needed gravy to be refilled and could do with tomato sauce and such in bottles on the tables ok with mince sauce and stuff in bowls if checked regulary. Over all food was ok but have tasted better. We were sat by the door and pizza kitchen which was very smokey they opened the door several times to let smoke out bt at this time of year could do with it shut as it got extremely cold for our older guests. I hope this is all ressolved so if we come again we arent dissapointed.

User

My husband and I stopped in for lunch yesterday (Sunday) we decided on a carvery, there was a short wait in the queue but not bad.The selection of meats and vegetables were good overall and very tasty the thing that let it down was the plates weren't hot and neither was the food, also lacking in any service around the tables.

User

Don't like writing bad reviews but we came here last night for my daughters birthday apart from one young lady the staff where so miserable ! Not a smile between them ! The roast was dry and not a lot of choice ! We have been to the one in havent and we love it there was slightly disappointing

User

Oh my I came here with my partner and 2 boys on a recommendation we drove from portsmouth hoping for a lovely roast couldn’t have been more wrong! Hardly anything left yet happy to take the money dry meat uncooked roast potatoes and veg bad attitude from the staff behind the counter terrible avoid!!!!

User

we regularly meet for a family lunch and decided to try the new refurbished Alma, that was our first big mistake. Ordering the carvery was our second, dried out poultry and withered veg was not our expectation of this once great eatery!! Portion size of the menu dishes left a lot to be desired as well as a half empty stomach!! Desserts were no better and the total atmosphere was that of complete carnage. The tables weren't cleared of glasses and it wasn't as if the waiter/waitresses were busy as u had to get virtually everything yourself. We were left disappointed and hungry and only wishing the place had stayed closed down!

User

Wow so we turn up for a carvery dinner at 18:30, when we order we are told that there's only turkey or beef left. Luckily for us not a problem. We order 1 children's meal and are told it will be out in 5 minutes. After waiting over 20 for the kids meal we go to get our mains only to find that the only meat left is a dry end of the turkey which is unlikely to even feed the 4 of us, the veg was shocking with 'roast' potatoes that appeared bpiled at best still swimming in their oil. We were told that it's all they had. After the awful meal we then tried to risk desserts only to be told they had no ice cream left at all, wonderful when 90% of their desserts are ice cream based or accompanied. Needless to say we have 4 very unhappy adults and an upset 6 year old who was looking forward to a pudding!

User

Went for a late lunch with the family. Meal was ok but not great. I had fish and chips. I’ve had better but our main criticism was the table service. No one came to clear the dirty plates although it wasn’t busy and there seemed to be plenty of staff. We were there for a couple of hours and even had a sweet also which was brought to the table but table still not cleared. Don’t think I’d go back.

User

Visited the newly opened restaurant to celebrate my 77th birthday. They knew we were coming because an advance booking had been made. After studying the new Menu half of us chose pizzas the rest carveries. Unfortunately the Alma had run out of dough so no pizzas at all available. Forced therefore to go for a carvery, which would have been acceptable save for no Turkey, good gammon & very leathery dried-out beef. Veg just about OK but roast potatoes swimming in fat. The old Alma carvery was so much better, particularly when Sarah was Manager there, but this new place just doesn't match up.Unlikely that we will return.

Tonight we booked a table for 6 for my brother in laws birthday. Luckily we found the table with our name as there was no staff around to show us.....that was just the beginning. We placed our orders 4 carvery and 2 ham and eggs (no pineapple at 7.10pm). We were told to go to the counter in 10 mins the eggs would be there. We did so and no eggs we asked the server who went off and came back 5 mins later and said they won't be long.....another 10 mins passed and I asked again..off he went and came back and said they were cooking ......i asked for a third time and after 45 mins of waiting they appeared I was offered no apology. My ham was then carved and thrown onto the plate, I advised I wasn't happy as it was the very end of the roast and would like a fresh one I was told it had to be finished first. I again said I was not accepting it to which the server stomped off kicking the kitchen door en route. He reappeared some 10 mins later with a new one carved it and again threw onto my plate bursting my eggs in the process by this time I had had enough took my plate and sat down. My husband and I sat eating our dinner on our own as the other 4 members of our party had finished by the time we got there. The food was edible. The vegetables looked like they had seen better days, no greens and the people behind us had to wait 15 mins to get their yorkshire puddings, the salad bar was non exixstent and had not been topped up or tidyed and was completely unappealing. We then decided who would have pudding etc to which my sister in law went to order then promptly returned to say due to a back log in the KITCHEN no more orders were being taken at present. This is a Friday night and the restaurant was not particularly busy. This was the last straw our evening had ben farcical enough. What was supposed to be a nice night celebrating a birthday ended up with us stopping on our way home to get a pudding. The place has been done up which it desperately needed. But the staff looked as though they didn't want to be there there seemed to be no management direction in place it was appalling.

User

Not one to leave poor reviews but felt this may help improve for the future. Recent refurbished and inside looks brilliant, unfortunately on arrival waited for nearly 10 mins to find a member of staff and sort out our breakfast order, the food on offer was poor, not enough choices, floating in so much oil we all felt sick after, also no scrambled egg so only selection was fried. No cereals, fruit on offer and mushrooms extra. We didn't have any staff come to check everything was ok, or to say thank you as we were leaving in fact staff were so few it was as if no one was there. Really disappointed!

User

If if was possible to leave minus stars I would Emily and Blake’s food was cold my food never turned up. If we were to visit again we would need an addition seat for the person holding a gun to my head. Avoid at all costs!

User

Came to the Alma for lunch with the family today. After having to find our own reserved table as there wasn't a waitress in sight we all ordered. Whilst family members were struggling with the incredibly dry Turkey and stuffing and cauliflower cheese without the cheese we sat waiting for pizza. Once we had all eaten we decided to take advantage of the garden as we had young children with us in the hope that the facilities were more acceptable than the food!! Whilst there we decided to order some desserts and unsurprisingly this was a timing disaster too with one dessert not being served at all. My impressions of the revamped Alma are not good and will not be visiting again. Have a serious think before coming here and maybe grab a MacDonalds instead!!!!

User

After waiting over 40 minutes for 2 chicken burgers. We were told to help ourselves to salad and the chips! Well the only salad items there, were soft onions ( which didn't taste like onion) a few tomatoes, and pasta! When we asked the worker if they were bringing out anymore salad items his reply was, what do you want? We asked for lettuce, cucumber etc... only to be told they had ran out!!!! And as for the chips... dry and tasteless! We come here most Sunday mornings for breakfast and thought we would try a meal on a Saturday evening. But to be honest I wish we never as won't be coming back!!! Very disappointed!

User

After waiting 20 minutes for our table to be cleared from previous customers, I eventually found a member of staff and asked them if they could clear it to be told that they only have one person clearing tables and they'd get her to come to us, after another 15 minutes we decided to clear the table ourselves. Got in the queue for the carvery to be told they'd run out of plates and we'd have to wait. Then they ran out of gravy. Once we got our gravy we had to dodge kids which were running around, I get that it's a family pub and there's going to be kids running about but to have the hot gravy placed right by the door that leads to the kids play area just seems to be an accident waiting to happen.

The beef was dry and really hard to cut and my husbands beer was flat.

Sorry to be writing such a bad review but our custom will definitely be going back to The Toby Carvery up the road!

User

Absolutely dismal, staff looked unhappy and unenthusiastic. Meat was ok, but all the vegetables were dry and cold or undercooked. Baked beans, mushy peas etc looked like they had been sat there all day....certainly won't be visiting again!!

User

Absolutely disgusting. Got a refund it was that bad. The peas weren’t cooked they were still extremely hard, the gravy was as thin as water & had lumps in. we waiting 25 mins for some stuffing & when the stuffing was finally ready there was no meat only the last hard bits, which he served right the way down to the crust . My 3 year old daughter got more meat on her child’s 3.99 carvery than my partners adult carvery.. Defo wouldn’t recommend. Told family members to go elsewhere after they pulled into the carpark. Gone extremely downhill since being took over by stonehouse.
