Sudeley Castle

About Sudeley Castle

Walk in the footsteps of Kings & Queens. . .

Sudeley Castle Description

Located in the heart of the Cotswolds, Sudeley Castle & Gardens has played an important role in England’s history for over 1, 000 years.

Rated amongst the top attractions on TripAdvisor for ‘Things to Do in the Cotswolds’, the castle rooms and exhibits contain many fascinating treasures, from ancient Roman times to the present day.

Outside, the castle is surrounded by a breathtaking 1, 200 acre estate and ten award-winning gardens. The centrepiece is the Queens Garden, so named because four of England’s queens – Anne Boleyn, Katherine Parr, Lady Jane Grey and Elizabeth I – once walked upon the original Tudor Parterre.

The Pheasantry at Sudeley houses a collection of 16 rare and endangered species of birds from around the world as part of Sudeley’s programme of breeding and conservation.

Sudeley Castle & Gardens is also the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds – Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives. Today visitors can explore the beautiful 15th century church where she lies entombed.

The whole family can explore the castle’s fascinating past and enjoy a host of exciting events throughout the year. Children will love scaling the wooden fort and whizzing on the zip wire in the famed Adventure Playground, as well as tackling the brand new 10-piece assault course.

Wonderful feedback from recent guests at our Queen's Cottage:
'My family had a wonderful stay in the Queen's Cottage. The cottage has all the amenities we could ask for and the free admission to Sudeley Castle was a great bonus. My kids were crazy about the amazing new adventure playground! I wouldn't hesitate to return!'

What a wonderful day out for all of the family - it was my love of all things 'Tudor' that brought us to Katherine Parr's former home but my other half, teenager and toddler all enjoyed the beautiful grounds, interesting history and fabulous adventure playground for kids big & small!

User

We visited here for the first time today. Absolutely top-notch from start to finish: the gardens, the house and the history were delightfully shared. We would drfinitely visit again!

User

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit but have to say the children’s playground is brilliant! Perfectly in the shade, secure & picnic benches spread about. Shame we don’t live closer!

User

This is one of my favourite places in the UK, truly. The gardens are magnificent, well cared-for, the atmosphere relaxing and the playground for kids is just fantastic. For my family it is a win-win place - we always start in the gardens and finish in the playground - so both I am my son can enjoy the visit. If you have a little one - Sudeley Castle beats Blenheim, Waddesdon and Stourhead by far.

This is a great place for young and old with lots to do and see. Children can enjoy the large play castle and activity areas and the fascinating stories of the Castle which has so much on display. There are lots of areas open to the public and beautiful gardens to explore, with many interesting parts and very well kept. To finish off to all this there are beautifully dressed gentlemen and ladies in period costume to meet, a pretty Church, ruins and a cafe at the entrance and another larger one in the main castle, take one of the lovely walks through the aviary and through the grounds and specialist gardens. Sudeley Castle has great seasonal events (special children's days on Wednesdays with great events & activities at no extra charge) the entry ticket price is good value but book ahead online and get a discount (under 5's are free & they have discounts for concessions). We love this place, always has something new to see and do:)

Sudeley castle was such an amazing place. It has been well kept and looked after over the years. Such history and stories behind the castle. It was great learning about our heritage. It was very clean and tidy. The staff were very approachable and knowledgeable about the castle. Lovely place and well worth a visit.

My husband and I took my parents as a Fathers Day treat. We loved it!! Such an interesting place with amazing history. Gardens and chapel too were stunning. It was a scorching hot day and the only downside was having no fans or air.con in the cafe area, it was like sitting in a greenhouse. Wouldn't stop us from returning though. Only an hour from home and we had no idea it was there. Will definitely be coming back. Thank you

User

From the beautiful walk up through the castle grounds, to the friendly reception of all the workers, Sudeley did not disappoint. We're on an extensive castles tour and Sudeley has been on our list for years. We were treated like special guests and enjoyed the interior rooms with audio visuals and seating, tours of the lavish rooms, and enjoyed cake & ale in the cafe area. The real treat is the exterior grounds ... everywhere are photo opps - so many, you don't know where to turn. Absolutely lovely. Thank you to Kim for helping behind the scenes. Continued success to Lady Ashcombe and family!

User

Beautifully kept, lovely grounds, not too big to look around. Videos are excellent with information about the history of the castle. Seems to sink in more than just written boards with info on and brings it more to life.

Only downside was the lack of signposts to get there we went miles out of the way but got there in the end thanks to a local farmer.

User

We went to Sudeley for the Spectacle of Light. It was beautiful but the price was too high for us. For one adult, an OAP and at £10 per child, it was just short of £50 for a 30minute walk around. If it had been £35 then we probably would have stayed for food and drinks and enjoyed the experience more but I couldn’t justify it. I would love to visit again but for us it’s out of our price range and this is a shame.

User

We visited with family (2 to 70) and all had a good time. Everyone found something to enjoy in the exhibitions and the children loved the play area. We found the staff very welcoming and helpful - not fazed by kids! Can't comment on the cafe as we took a picnic. An excellent day out.

User

My husband and I really enjoyed our time at Sudeley. Entrance price was reasonable, with friendly staff. Maps are easy to follow, grounds/gardens are well signposted and lovely. All the guides were approachable and knowledgeable. We had a sandwich and coffee in the cafe & were amazed at the price, it was a lot cheaper than other similar places,(tasty too, bread was thick and seeded, chutney was delish. Although a strong cheddar would have been better than the double Gloucester which was used). Staff in the cafe were friendly too. The rooms in the house were lovely. Its obvious that the family that still run/live there are very proud of the house and it's history, quite rightly so. We spent more time at Sudeley than we thought we would and would definitely recommend it to family and friends. Thank you

User

I had my car in the annual cars show at the castle which was my reason to be there but having seen the castle and grounds I would recommend Sudeley castle for a visit . Learning the full history of the castle with it's royal connections was very interesting . Friendly , knowledgeable staff were on hand to answer any questions we had .

User

Beautiful castle and grounds with a lovely little cafe, very helpful volunteers who are all knowledgeable. Would’ve liked to have seen more in regards to the castle’s rich history though!

User

Always a great place to visit. The newly refurbished exhibits look good but the house is cold. We rushed through the visit as it was warmer outside than inside! Also why have got rid of the children dressing up area. It was so much fun. You need some hands on things to attract the young ones to history... Finally was quite surprised there are no concessions in the tariff. Also perhaps there could be more art in the gardens.

User

Sudeley Castle was a lovely surprise with great history. However very disappointed with the cafe. I visited with my sisters 12th April and we waited for approx 15 minutes for a seat (not a problem), we then queued for another 15 minutes to order our food only to be told no more orders could be taken as the kitchen was too busy. Very bad management.

User

More of a stately home than a castle, with part castle ruins within the grounds. Beautiful gardens, and lots of fascinating history including the tomb of Catherine Parre laid to rest in St.Mary's Church, adjacent to the castle. Very informative staff, ideal for children's history lessons. Lovely cafe serving a good variety of reasonably priced meals, and light bites, baguettes etc. Extremely pricey entrance fees in comparison to much larger castles in Britain. Considering Sudeley is a small castle, tickets are twice as much as some of the more popular castles.

User

This review applies to the charging policy for the gardens and children's play area. I took my daughter with her young baby and four year old granddaughter to Sudeley Castle on Saturday 7th June. We arrived at 3:45pm only to be told that the play area would close at 4:45pm. We accepted this but were told that we would still have to pay the full entry fee of £40 plus for what was essentially 1 hours play in the children's Fort. I asked if it was possible to have some discount as it was so late in the day but was refused. Needless to say, my Granddaughter was very disappointed. I can remember when there used to be separate entry fees for the castle and gardens. Why can't Sudeley offer some flexibility - very disappointing.
