About The Canteen

Proudly placed on Stokes Croft, The Canteen serves up deliciously affordable, seasonal food, locally brewed beers and spirits and FREE live music every night of the week!

The Canteen Description

Nestled perfectly in the warm belly of Hamilton House, The Canteen emerged in 2009 out of the creative inspiration and collective efforts of a bunch of Stokes Croft and Bristol brilliants.

From day one we wanted to offer outstanding free live music, affordable homecooked food made with heaps of love and ingredients sourced as locally as we could manage and moreover we wanted to make a place for all to come, a hub, a hotspot, for it to take on it's own direction and to meet and serve the community that drives it forward.

So we serve delicious food from 12-3pm and 5-10pm EVERY day! We could describe it as international fayre with a Bristolian twist - our kitchen team are local grown with roots in carribbean, french, irish stock and love bringing those influences into the daily changing menu. This stuff is fresh AND you get a complimentary soup with every meal, just because. . . it's nice : )

Our music programme is more vibrant than ever - and still as free as day one - you can expect gentler tones from Sunday - Wednesday spanning folk, jazz and acapella ensembles, then we ramp you up Thursday - Saturday and each evening from 10pm the tables are re-arranged for the unavoidable rip-roaring dancing times.

It's generally about celebration, bring it down to the Canteen, and share it out.

We love to have you by.

ARXX
Two women, two x’s, one big sound…
Hannah Pidduck’s raw-rubbed vocals come from the hard end of soul where it tips into gospel, Clara Townsend’s drumming has the considered impact of velvet-wrapped sledgehammers. Factor in Hannah’s locked-tight guitar and you have the Arxx sound in all its throat-grabbing directness.

🍷🍷 We like to keep it local & sustainable at the Canteen from our food through to our wine. Here's one to try this month from one of England's oldest and largest vineyards Three Choirs Vineyards this is a beautiful English House Dry. Goes exceptionally well with the salads we currently have on our menus.

I popped under recommendation from someone I met in the harbour side when I was on my own visiting town, but looking for live music. Sadly there was only 45 mins until closing time though.

I picked up a few free magazines and some flyers and I left a few of my own for my anti-establishment, mental health awareness campaign #CDVibeVan.

Please check it out, if you're intrigued as to what it's all about! (I was in the news for selling Donald Trump toilet paper, while I was fundraising for my campaign! :-)

I found it a very cool venue, great music, great craft ale, positive, community spirit and a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere to boot.

I'd love to meet some likeminded, positive change orientated people to collaborate with next time I'm in town (which) will be very soon, as I love the place! ;-)

Peace, love & positive vibes,

Chan-Dog :-) xx

Have been drinking in the canteen for a while and have always had a good time very relaxed and chilled, great atmosphere and polite staff . Last night I was out on a date and me and my date had a kiss and held hands. Quite innocent and nice and very sweet the date was going very well. Then from nowhere a guy comes up to us and say ‘can you two not do than I’m trying to watch the bands and listen to the music and I don’t wanna see two queer guys kissing’ I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say at first but then said to the man don’t look at us then too which he replied ‘it’s disgusting I should have to see it’ at this point I got quite angry but fortunately one of the staff was passing by at the time. I explained what had happened and she went off and immediately came back with her manager. Without hesitating the manager asked the man to leave explaining how the canteen is a safe space and they will not tolerate any type of hate in there establishment to their clientele. I am so thankful to that manager and the staff. I would highly recommend the canteen for everyone I’ve always felt comfortable to be myself there and will continue to go there with my date and feel happy that I can hold his hand and give him a kiss without feeling like I have to hide my affections. Again thank you canteen staff.

I've had some really great food here, and at a sensible price; so hopefully this is just a hiccup.

My 'cauliflower with red lentil and coconut curry topped with toasted almond flakes - served with wild rice' ......was a little odd to say the least.

What I actually received was a single dish ( i.e. a small soup plate), of cauliflower with dahl, there were some almonds though.

Mmmm definitely not red lentil, no hint of curry or coconut.... and no rice.

Very strange considering the usual standard, which has always been spot on.

I love eating here, I hope it's not slipping.......

I felt compelled to leave some honest feedback.
