The Cowherds is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, providing the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub food and ales.

The Cowherds Description

The Cowherds in Southampton is a country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character. Our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Book a table online and enjoy a spot by our roaring log-fire. Or make the best of the British summertime by eating alfresco in our pretty beer garden.

A little Pub history

Built in 1762 on the site of the old cowherd's house, we were renamed the Southampton Arms for a brief period in 1857 before reverting back to the Cowherds 14 years later. We have maintained the name since, paying note to our heritage and our location - Southampton Common, one of the UK's most important wildlife sites.

The Cowherds has open views over Southampton Common, a haven for wildlife, and is close to the university. A walk around Southampton's Old Town will follow the footsteps of William the Conqueror, Henry V and the Pilgrim Fathers.

We had special family time together outside sitting under the trees on the grass after my three daughters and one little Granddaughter completed the 10k ' Race for Life ' A fabulous place to complete the day with fabulous people

User

Visited today as was dropping my daughter back to her uni digs. We took a stroll to your lovely pub and had my mum with me too. We had 1 roast beef & 2 roast turkey dinners and we all thoroughly enjoyed them. Delicious food and a really lovely, friendly waitress called Jodie. Would highly recommend this place.

User

The food was amazing , had to wait 25 mins for it but was well worth it! Will certainly be going again . Had the ham hock and my husband had the hunters chicken. The chips were the best we’ve ever had.

User

Lovely meal at the Cowherds this afternoon. Served by a fantastic waiter! I wish I had taken his name. Dark haired with blue eyes. Friendly and so attentive! First class service. The Cowherds are lucky to have him.

User

Lovely Roast Dinner very nicely cooked service time and waitress excellent could not fault this place will definitely be returning x

User

I love this place. The food is always lovely and I am pleased to say it has an excellent vegan menu. Today I treated myself to one of the amazing salads.

User

Had a lovely three course Christmas dinner here yesterday with my daughters and a couple of friends. Food was lovely, very tasty and hot with good sized portions. The service was great with our waiter and waitress going out of their way to ensure we had an enjoyable meal and get together. Thank you

Had a lovely family meal today celebrating my Granddaughters 6th Birthday. Large party, but nothing was too much trouble .

Fast service, amazing food ( roast) and our waitress was a real credit to you .

Thanks so much .

User

Had a great lunch today with 7 family members. It was very busy but the service was excellent from Shannon. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The second time we have had lunch here in the last month and we could not fault the food or the service.

User

Fab meal for fathers day. Food was really lovely and generous portions. Staff were friendly and not rushed off their feet despite a busy pub. All drinks looked great and well made. Couldn't fault it!

User

Had a lovely family party, thanks to all of the staff for making us so welcome, and for looking after us so we’ll.

User

Nice pub, very friendly and attentive staff, however we ordered off the set 2 or 3 course menu, starters lovely, my wife's fishcake was frozen in the middle which was a shame. It was quickly replaced. On paying the member of staff pointed out that our voucher would be cancelled out as you can only have 'one offer' implying the set menu is 'an offer?' As it turns out she was incorrect as our AA discount voucher applied the full 20%. Im guessing other schemes may be different which doesn't strike me as particularly fair as a set menu is a set menu rather than an 'offer' I thought? Anyhow, nice pub, nice staff, slip ups aside I'd happily go again

User

Me and my friend went for Sunday lunch I had the lamb shank it was very nice but the whole roast was warm must of been left on the pass for to long didn't want to say anything as I was so hungry and the staff where running around like loons none of them see to tell us the same answer as to where to sit or table service apart from that would eat here again just hope next time the food will be hot !!!

User

Had a family Christmas meal there yesterday .. the food was nice and value for money .but the whole experience.was disapointing . We felt rushed .were told we couldn't go to the bar to buy own drinks this meant we had to try to divi up the seperate drinks bill , the reason being it would have caused a rush at the bar.what would they have done if we had just poped in for drinks ?? Would the bar staff not of coped ? .i would not have booked if i had known this .

The table was squashed up against wall so we couldn't interact between other members of group .

This meant that it was just a eat and leave job, no one felt relaxed enough to stay on after meal with a nice coffee or brandy ..

The waiter was rude , referring to individuals as either " mate " " babe" or "darling "..

This was our family's only xmas get together as a group and we all came away feeling we hadn't spent any quality time with each other ..

Not a scratch on the experience we had at another venue last year ..

Good for a quick lunch and drink .not a place to entrust a valued family get together.

User

Conveniently situated near to the town of Southampton and adjacent to the huge open area of the Common.

Saw lots of mums with buggies, people with dogs, students from the uni, office workers out for lunch.

It was constantly busy and is open all day.

The menu is comprehensive and it has a kids menu.

There is seating in the restaurant( waiter service), at the bar and some outside.

There was a 30 minute wait for food at lunchtime yesterday.

The staff were busy but efficient.

The wifi had poor re epitome.

There is building work at the side from the e tension to the play area.

Not a relaxing experience but would visit again when the play park is finished.

It is probably wiser to book beforehand.

My partner has been planning to take me to this place as he thought was a good pub to have dinner. Got there and were told to find a seat as we didn't book a table. We looked at the menu and thought the food sound nice. My partner went to the bar to order our food and drinks. Drinks were brought to us promptly. However after 40mins my partner went to ask how long it will take as it felt we have been sitting down without our food forever. He was told it will take 45 mins. So we said 5 more mins is not bad. But after 15 mins I told my partner to find out what is happening as on one has come to say anything. He asked one of the staff and she went to find out. She came back later and said our food was given to another table. The staff member was very defensive when I said no one has come to any of the table just to ask how things are going and if they did they will realise that some customers haven't been served for a long time. Meanwhile customers who came after udhave been served and almost finishing their food. By now it's been more than an hour. Our food came later and it did look nice. My was as I ordered but my partner's was missing some ingredients. I feel customer service was poor and felt because we didn't book a table we were invisible to them however we were paying customers. I don't get it.

Ps.. I 've read a lot of racism post at this place. Wanted yo think that wasn't the case for us but I'm rethinking now. It's a shame that people still have inferiority complex. My partner and I will never step foot and will not recommend this place to our friends.

User

Love the cowherds as a pub & its surroundings, but just had roast pork & it was awful.. carrots were cold & tasted like a dirty oven, well it all tasted like the dirty oven. Parsnips, potatoes mushy & warm, pork was chops & dry, & no crackling!!! Yuk! Sorry was really disappointed! Haven't eaten there in a while & was lovely before, but wont be eating there again!

User

Was bloody awful. Pizza came with put pepperoni when queried waitress said it's has.... challenged and was brought a separate pot full of cold pepperoni..omg only after this was offered a fresh one no thanks. Was given 11.95 refund to the penny. Never again. Family's pizzas were cold as well.

User

Terrible attitude from the waitress . Shocking ! First day of sunshine and obviously can't handle it .
