"The Fine Wooden Article Company" provides a professional service, drawing on many years of experience in the carpentry and classic yacht restoration industry. As qualified shipwrights, attention to detail and exemplary craftsmanship come as second nature. We ensure high levels of quality in both our service and in our finished products, putting every effort into using only the best hardwoods, all from sustainable sources. Care for the environment is very much at the heart of our work.
Our passion and pride for functional art is essential to us, as well as meeting your requirements. We endeavour to make the service as personal as we are able. Whether a small engraving idea or meeting big orders with specific time scales, weŌĆÖre always happy to discuss your requirements. We aim to provide a service that is personal, unique and bespoke.
Ideally located, we are based in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside, nestled in the banks of the river Severn. In close proximity to both Gloucester Docks and with close by motorway access, we have a well adapted facility and workshopspace able to cater to the needs of almost any given wooden project. More specifically being able to house and build Masts & Spars up to 100ŌĆÖ in length in any one of our two workshops.

We offer a trio of services here at "The Fine Wooden Article Company. " The first is a wide range of finely crafted wooden items, from benches and boot rails to swing seats and wine racks all of which can be personalised through selecting a variety of options. These include engraved text (the first line of text is included, and all our products in the range have RustinŌĆÖs Danish Oil professionally applied as standard), various product sizes, hardwoods and details on finishing are available options also.
All you need to do is choose your desired product from our store and decide how you would like it personalised. This can be with your very own message, quote, date, name, event, house name and number or any other relevant text you desire. We are happy to provide suggestions with this, and detail descriptions on each of our products may begin to tantalise your thinking in choosing and deciding.
Your requirements will then be passed onto our highly skilled team to produce a quality, detailed product. Such a personalised gift or addition to the family home or garden will be treasured forever.
A gift-wrapping service is also available.
The second service we offer is a professional bespoke and tailored service, where specialist items are developed and created by the means of "Upcycling"
"Upcycling" was inspired by the likes of Kevin McCloud with his recent "Man Made Home, " television programme, and other ingenious artists and designers who "Upcycle" old and redundant items and use them as raw materials to construct something, innovative, useful and aesthetically artistic.
"Upcycling" is in essence, creating beauty and art with a functional purpose, bringing old forgotten items out of retirement and giving them a new lease of life, and identity. This has the added advantage of being good for the environment, and creates amazing and unique articles.
An example of "Upcycling" is our bar stool and caf├® table set made from old oak, red wine barrels and vintage cast iron tractor seats from which we create a beautiful set. Suitable for bars, caf├® court yards, hotels, restaurants and pub beer gardens. These have all attracted lots of positive of attention.
As well as offering this Bespoke service where we like to "Upcycle" as much as we are able, we also give you the chance to submit specific build requests and engage with us in the design process. For example, we were commissioned to produce a free standing book shelf with specific design and size requirements. This we were able to do to great effect, ensuring it will fit the desired needs of its intended use.

One last thing to mention, is that if youŌĆÖre a boat, yacht or classic yacht owner we also design and build yachts half models which being a compliment your vessel, are wall hung and can be shown off on board, in your own homeor on your board room wall.
In our third port of services here at "The Fine Wooden Article Co. " we have the experience and desire todesign and build, or restore Masts and Spars of all shapes and sizes for any application. Be it for classic sailing yachts and craft that require wooden spars and yards, or indeed for architectural projects requiring refined wooden structural members.
Peter R . Meredith, the founder of this company, has worked for many years to date, in all aspects of the specialist field of wooden boat and shipbuilding. Both as an accomplished design engineer producing working drawings to be built from, and as a shipwright, he possesses the skill sets required to undertake and deliver on time and on budget.

Centuries old art of charring wood known as Shou-Sugi-Ban to make timber more resilient to fire, rot, and the effects of UV. Is also super pleasing as an effect and surface finish as used here. With a beautifully formed, least to say super old stem of Yew, this commission needed some WOW factor to meet the clients brief. The Shou-Sugi-Ban being ancient as is the Yew itself seemed fitting, and gave the outside an amazing patine, couple this with some careful and considered po...uring of molten pewter to fill voids in the Yews upper surface added a level of contemporary required by the clients. Topped off with CNC cut and tempered glass framed the Yew and the piece as an all encompassing ancient yet modern, contemporary yet distinguished coffee table and centre piece to the clients main drawing room.... Seeing it in-situ and this works on every level...... Sustainable harvesting and re planting of English oaks and hardwoods is important... This oak has come to the end of its serviceable 150-200 year life. Oak saplings will be planted and managed in its honour. Estimate this stem to weigh in at a mighty 3 Tonne and is about to be processed through our mill and set down to begin its 2-3 year air drying process. Looking forwards to nurturing this formidable specimen through this process and then the machining and making in the future.
The figuring in the grain, the marbling colouring deep purples through blonds, the natural edges, the density..... For sure this unique material is going to make some amazing pieces. Natural edged bathroom surfaces, tables and countertops of varying descriptions, dining, coffee, side, occasional. Incorporate this amazing wood with metal, glass and ceramics... WOW... ... An exquisite Solid English Oak & Glass Coffee Table design full of sculptural presence and craftsmanship detail. One of our bespoke concept designs, it is inspired by PeterŌĆÖs seafaring days and the lively character of the ocean.
The glass top is recessed into the flowing wave-shaped oak ends, secured with natural leather washers that are fixed with chrome dome caps ŌĆō in keeping with the nautical feel of the piece.
Any naturally occurring gaps in the oak has been filled with photoluminescence fillers, which in the dark give a faint impression of glowing aquamarine veins ŌĆō just like a night-time seascape. The wood is subtly stained with white wax grain, and over-coated with a satin gloss coating for a durable finish.

This design came from a client commission, and was a response to their desire for a beautiful, very well built piece designed to withstand the daily demands of family life.
INSPIRATION
... In light of consultation with our clients, this subtle round solid Ash & Wenge table was inspired by research into a historic design from the Victoria & Albert Museum. In this piece, the harmonious symmetry of the tableŌĆÖs sculptural form is subtly emphasised by combining the lightness of Ash with the depth of Wenge woods in strategic, echoing details.
The design process was driven by a creative compromise between elegance and durability, exactly the type of challenge which we relish!
We used solid Ash from our own sustainable stocks, hand machining the table top by hand. After gluing up the pedestal, we put it through a 5 axis machining process to achieve the perfect roundness the design demanded.
To create a sculptural piece with definition, we focussed on strategic detailing and increased the colour contrast: the already white Ash has been stained white, whilst the dark Wenge is stained ebony. The piece is then finished with a high gloss to ensure it weathers the varied rigours of daily family use.

... A Dining Table design inspired by the layered milk & coffee coloured grain of light English Ash and dark Black American Walnut. It is as uniquely elegant as structurally sophisticated, with stylised iterations of the traditional dovetail & butterfly joints.
Sculptural form and attention to detail meet in this fabulous piece.
The Capuccino Table top beautifully showcases a variation on a joint known as Butterfly Patch, turning a structural technique into an aesthetic focal point. The legs are also traditionally jointed using an ingenious development of a developed Dovetail, re-named a Fishtail.
This characterful masterpiece is the result of long, careful hours in the workshop refining the design and techniques, as we wished to create a piece that revealed rather than concealed the level of craftsmanship, whilst displaying the great quality of the wood.
In our choice of woods & the way in which we have worked them, we have paid especial attention to any possible movement and fluctuation in the wood, to provide you with a piece that will truly stand the test of time.

A gorgeous dining table in our own Pippy Oak, inspired by the nature & grain of this lovely English wood. ŌĆśX-legsŌĆÖ is a contemporary variation on the traditional farmhouse kitchen, traditional in our use of Oak, contemporary with its shaped inset glass - ultimately timeless by reason of its fine quality and minimalist structural design.
The Pippy Oak for this dining table has been carefully treated so that the beauty of its natural grain shines through, its organic irregularities are further emphasised with the insertion of a central rebated glass panel ŌĆō a lovely feature which gives the table a feeling of lightness, when it is in truth a very sturdy piece. We received the oak name board for the gate of our cottage yesterday - only a week after placing our order. It is really beautiful, we love it. in fact we are now choosing a new gate as our old garden gate is simply not good enough to put it on! The photographs on Mr Meredith's website do not do his work justice. We would certainly use this company again and enthusiastically recommend to friends.

As a result of ordering a house sign which was beautiful we asked Peter to build us some floor to ceiling cupboards. These are also beautifully made and finished. So then we asked him to completely remodel our kitchen and what a fabulous job he did. The old kitchen was completely removed and then walls re-plastered, rewired, radiators moved and units built and fitted and the result is fabulous and unique, the finishing touches, such as natural oak pieces to house the power sockets are so lovely. The job was done within the specified times and all the tradesman Peter used were professional, helpful and always turned up when they were supposed to. We are so pleased with the result and can't praise Peter's work highly enough - nothing was too much trouble (and we did change our minds about things several times). Would be very happy to recommend the Fine Wooden Article Company and will definitely be using them again for any future projects.
