A top doctor has urged people to check on frail and elderly relatives and neighbours as high temperatures look set to return across the south this weekend.
Dr Diana Hulbert, a consultant in emergency medicine at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, said recent hot conditions have led to a “steady rise” in the number of older people requiring admission to hospital.
She spoke out following Met Office warnings the heatwave across the south and east of England co...uld continue until mid-August, with temperatures of up to 30C possible this weekend.

A team of nine young kidney transplant patients from Southampton Children’s Hospital are gearing up to take part in this year's British Transplant Games – but need the support of the public to help them get there.
The four-day annual sporting competition, which begins on 2 August in Birmingham, is expected to attract more than 850 athletes – children and adults – who will compete in a range of events including tennis, swimming, athletics, cycling and football.
All participan...ts from Team Southampton, who are aged between three and 16 years old, have received life-saving treatment at the city’s specialist nephrology unit, which treats young people with acute and chronic kidney disease and cares for around 40 transplant patients a year before and after surgery.

In September last year, Jo Hall, a sister in Princess Anne Hospital started cycling to raise money to replace the worn out chairs in the outpatients department. And she’s done it!
The department had become so busy the staff had started to use chairs from the café so all the patients could sit down. After months of fundraising, the new chairs have finally arrived.
Jo says: “I am truly humbled and touched that so many people care and have supported my fundraising for our patie...nts. We now have two bariatric armchairs and 15 seats in both waiting areas! This is an incredible change!”
Well done Jo! You truly are a superstar! 😘 Southampton Hospital Charity UK

Researchers in Southampton and Edinburgh have discovered even low levels of psychological distress may increase the risk of developing some chronic diseases.
The study, led by Catharine Gale, a professor of cognitive epidemiology at the Medical Research Council’s Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit at Southampton General Hospital, assessed 16,485 UK adults over a three year period.
Results, published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, showed that distress, even at a low or mo...derate levels, was a significant risk factor in developing conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arthritis and cardiovascular disease.

A ‘soft’ laser therapy pioneered in the UK by doctors in Southampton to help prevent side effects in patients receiving treatment for head and neck cancer could now be offered nationwide.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has now recommended low level laser therapy (LLLT) as a way of healing tissue in the mouth and throat while a patient undergoes chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The technology was introduced by Dr Shanmugasundaram Ramkumar, a consult...ant clinical oncologist at Southampton General Hospital, who described it as a “potential breakthrough” ahead of an initial project in 2014.

We have been indebted to this hospital for nearly 10 years and will continue to be so for the rest of our lives. It took an entire dedicated team from the surgeon who ‘s huge hands saved our 8 week baby boy to the person who made the beds in which we were allowed to stay in to be close to our baby boy. Words will never be enough and on each visit we are met with the same dedication year in year out!!! So much love and respect to the whole NHS team .

I've been in with my autistic daughter for an MRI, she was anxious, doesn't cope with loud noises or confined spaces. All the staff that dealt with her were so kind and caring and didn't pressure her once. She managed to get through the whole scan with all their support and we truly can't thank you all enough. Special thanks to the office lady who went out of her way to check up on my daughter and praise her for getting through it. You all went above and beyond in our eyes

I visited the hospital this evening with my 3 year daughter, who turned out to have broken her arm. Everyone was amazing. The receptionists, nurses, doctors, HCA’s were so lovely helpful friendly and couldn’t do enough to help either of. Even though it was busy and there was rude patients and poorly patients. Nothing was too much. My daughter thought the whole thing was some amazing adventure and clearly felt comfortable with everyone she met as she wasn’t scared or shy about anyone touching her arm or asking her questions. Thank you millions. You are all amazing.

I recently had minor surgery for cubital tunnel syndrome. All the staff at the orthopaedics out patients department were absolutely brilliant. Despite being very busy they made time to talk to my wife and I and made the day so much easier. Whatever they get payed it is not enough. Amazing care from all the staff in children's ED today for my little boy who needed his lip stitching up. We were seen quickly and were involved in the decision making process. He managed to avoid a G.A due to some sensible decision making and as a result has been at home and comfortable rather than waiting around on a ward. His lip is looking a lot better too. Many thanks.

A massive thank you to everyone in paediatric intensive care. A special thank you to Nurses Andy and Amy for the amazing care of my little boy. We are so lucky to have the NHS and i will forever be thankful to the SGH xx

I'm not sure. I try my best to avoid seeing doctors/NHS and only go there when it's something serious or could be serious. On Wednesday I had a accident on my bike, scraps and bruising is fine with me but not being able to breath properly or move because my insides hurt is something I want to have checked up. I work cycling with deliveroo and ubereats, the 5 minutes I spent talking to the NHS staff just ended up with them telling me to go down the shops and get some painkillers didn't seem right to me. Tbh I dunno of I am badly hurt or just bruising but I definitely feel I need 3-4 days off work and I have insurance, would a medical certificate been too much? Guess so, hope the advice of riding through the pain and it will recover is correct. I hope feeling light headed and dizzy is just down to the heat.

User

First time I went to the emergency eye department, I was buzzed in and told to take a seat. I then waited an hour despite other people being seen to even though they got there after me. Not great as I was in considerable pain - turns out they didn't realise I was there... despite sitting in a small waiting room on my own. Returned for an appointment today at the requested time, booked in at reception as directed and waited an hour and a half before asking how long the waits were going to be as lots of people were being shown in before me despite getting here after me. Turns out they just forgot to actually book me in. Feeling incredibly annoyed/invisible and think the staff need a bit more training. If there was somewhere else I could go, I would. Perhaps I just need to turn into one of those horrible bolshy people or risk being ignored forever...

NHS gets a lot of bad press at times. We are so grateful for UHS and the amazing teams of staff that have worked (&are still always working) so hard to keep our son as well as possible. Also various teams/staff who have cared for other loved ones. Huge thanks to everyone, especially CF paediatric and the fab team in adults C5. You do an amazing job.THANKS :)
