We are no stranger to Morris Dancing at the History Centre, with dancers on the staff and the annual Chippenham Folk Festival on the May Bank Holiday weekend.
But there was once a darker side to the Morris: "thereupon there was a great fight"! Dissent, rebellion, and the imagined village... how was it that Morris Dancing threatened the pillars of the state?

We’re excited that the Oxford English Dictionary will be adding a quotation from one of our documents (a deed dated 13 June 1324 between John Druweys of Cortynton, and his brother Robert Druweys of Easton) to the entry for “grassland” as the earliest known reference. It seems particularly appropriate for our beautiful chalk downland county!

Can you help Celebrating Age Wiltshire with "reCollections"?
Help compile a picture of the local industries that have shaped where we live and work today. Over the coming months we’ll be collecting stories of working life in and around Corsham, Box, Lacock and Colerne. Individual experiences are valuable and contribute to a better understanding of our rich local history.
Come along to our first reCollections event at Springfield Library, 10.30 am to 12.00 noon, 21 May 2019. ...During a relaxed and informal session we’ll hear local people talking about their working lives, reflecting on what has changed as well as what has stood the test of time. Bring along any memorabilia and join the conversation, or simply come and enjoy the company and a cup of tea.
County Local Studies Librarian, Julie Davis, will also be demonstrating Know Your Place - a fantastic community resource for mapping and memory!
Transport can be provided if required. Please contact Penney Ellis to find out more about reCollections or to arrange transport. 07896 315 778 penney.ellis@photo-sensitive.co.uk
