Windswept Recording Studio Description

Biog -

Luke has 25 years experience working both as a live and studio engineer. Starting his journey at 15 when he left school early to work in his neighbours studio, operating the tape machine and making tea! Soon after, all the studio equipment was moved to a barn on Luke's family farm, and later the barn was converted into a studio by Luke and the neighbour, Jon.

Luke is a self taught engineer, gaining experience through live mixing in the folk circuit in his teens, touring with a Reggae band for 3 years and working in a early version or what is now Windswept studio, recording bands of various genres. During the 90's Luke was abducted by a different music scene altogether as electronic dance music took off.

Meanwhile Luke was also taking on a major restoration project in his studio, upgrading vintage gear with quality modern components.

Windswept is a totally unique one off studio. From prototype 'Amek mozart 28: 16: 8: 2' type desk to lots of handmade clones of outboard. (See kit list) Put together by Jon.

Even after taking the plunge with a digital platform around 7 years ago, Luke admits he had still struggled to create the spacious dynamic mixes he was used to, that stood up next to a modern 'brick wall limited' product.

Luke found for a while he had been left behind by the digital age, as bands were even able to record themselves at home. So he found himself back working in the event industry for 6 years doing temporary interiors for big corporate events and festivals. This wasn't ideal as it meant long periods of time away from his young family.

Luke has recently over come this difficulty by returning to mix in the analogue domain, and only using the digital platform as a recording medium, occasionally taking advantage of it's automation capabilities and some of the other digital functions.

Luke is really pleased with the result. The combination means you have the best of modern tools, but you have the warmth and richness of sound which comes from the analogue desk and outboard.
It gives music back it's soul and depth. More than anything, Luke is excited that he can now offer what the music industry is beginning to demand.

So after sitting tight, people have become more aware of the false promises they had been sold by the digital revolution, they are unable to capture the soul and ambience which resides within real musicians.

Over the past year, Windswept has been brought back to life with plenty of musical energy. Recent recordings have given Luke his confidence back. Especially because he has been receiving positive feedback from bands, such as ' it's the best recording we've ever had'! ! (Stone Donkey Pilots)

Based on a disused farm 6 miles out of Salisbury, Windswept is a great place to totally shut off the outside world and tune solely into creativity. The countryside views open your mind whilst feeling grounded.

Due to the location, free camping is available, and vegetarian home made meals and refreshments can be included for a small extra charge.

Luke says “ I was 16 years old and on the dole, I'd left school before gaining any qualifications, and I thought the sensible thing to do would be to build a studio, having absolutely no idea what was involved in terms of skill or capital investment! Starting out with some basic equipment and a huge amount of determination. Over the years with trades, exchanges and loans, I'm finally proud to announce that the studio has evolved into something truly exclusive“
(As you'll see from our kit list, you just can not buy a lot of this gear! )
