About Classical Sheffield

Bringing the city's classical music together.

Classical Sheffield Description

Classical Sheffield is an increasingly comprehensive collecting-place for information about what's on and who's doing it. We all feel that pooling the activities and resources of the many musicians at work here can only be of benefit to performers and audiences alike. Bernard Lee, longstanding classical-music critic of the Sheffield Telegraph, is managing editor of the 'official' CS reviews and features; his experience and insight is an invaluable part of the site. Alongside it, performing groups provide a wealth of content and media about what they're doing.

So I can find out what's on each week?

Yes - all in one place. We continue the tradition of weekly listings bulletins long established by the Sheffield Telegraph. We're really pleased that these are collated by Bernard Lee, well known to classical musicians in the city over several decades. Each Wednesday, full listings for the coming week are published both on the site and also by email: you can subscribe to the emails for free here. Suddenly, space limitations are no more: we are free to talk about the true range and excitement of everything musical going on in our city!

I'm an audience member. What's in it for me?

You get all the information you need in making choices about what to attend. You might not have previously been aware of the richness and variety of Sheffield's music scene, and you might well discover something new here. Take a look at the calendar and decide on your concertgoing for the coming month or week. Just see what's on! You can also share and talk about your experiences, ask questions, and generally be part of a music-loving community!

I think it's a great idea. What can I do to help?

Most importantly - get involved! The success of this project depends on that. It's quick and easy to share the web address www. classicalsheffield.org. uk and to encourage the music-lovers you know to jump aboard.

If you're a member of a performing group, get active! Write features and share news, make sure your events appear in the listings, tell your audience about the site, say you're part of it, put the web address on your programmes and posters, use the logos and blurbs. . .

I run a music performing group. How can we be featured?

The whole website is open to everyone! We would love to feature every single classical musician in Sheffield, whether singer or instrumentalist, group or soloist, professional or amateur. To submit listings for an event, email bernardlee@blueyonder. co. uk. No matter how far in advance your event is, Bernard will add it to the Calendar, which gives outline details of events way into the future. Then, on the relevant Wednesday, the full listings will appear in the bulletin.

What about the 'Digest' section - how is that different?

This is where you can get creative! We think it's essential that every performing group thinks about its programmes and can talk about why people should attend its events. The Features section is for your content about your forthcoming music. Whether it's an interview, article, or story, the Digest is available to you to talk about what you're doing. It's growing into a blog by Sheffield musicians for Sheffield music-lovers and, like the site in general, shows the diversity and dedication of our music.

All performing groups can have (many do already) their own page on the site where they upload and share all their news, features, previews, and other stuff. Are you a music-maker? Click here for the Guide to Getting Going!

In case you need some inspiration for writing we've written a few tips to help out.

What about my group's page?

Yes, that's another feature of the site. A really useful directory of classical musicians in Sheffield all in one place. Each group can post whatever they like about themselves, and update it whenever they please. This gives all kinds of exciting variety in the way that pages are being used. Get started by exploring the list of groups. If you're a performer and would like a page, contact us and we'll get you set up!

And there are reviews as well?

Yes. For many years, Sheffield music groups have benefited from specialist reviews in the Sheffield Telegraph by its classical-music critic Bernard Lee. As times change, and more of the market moves online, we feel that there's now an opportunity to provide credible, rigorous, sympathetic reviews of local music-making to a digital audience. Groups will always benefit from positive reviews from respectable sources, and audiences are pleased to hear authoritative comment.

The Classical Sheffield reviewing team is drawn from recent Telegraph reviewers, all locally active professional musicians themselves, working under the editorial management of Bernard Lee and offering a variety of different voices. We send a 'CS' reviewer to as many concerts as possible, and certainly to groups that invite us to do so.

Is there a cost in all this?

Not to anyone using it. The modest start-up costs were borne by Music in the Round, working with colleagues from across the city including the University of Sheffield, City Hall, and performing groups large and small. We're developing a method of governance whereby CS can become a really collective effort. The emphasis will always be on making the whole site accessible to everyone, so that everyone can benefit to the maximum.
