Officers from our Spondon Safer Neighbourhood Team are joining forces with local councillors and workers to ask for volunteers to help deliver Christmas safety leaflets next week.
The project is happening next Tuesday, December 18, and is to remind and encourage local Spondon residents to keep themselves and property safe this Christmas.
The team will be joining Derby City Council Neighbourhood Officer, Rebecca Hudson and Councillor Nicola Roulstone in delivering the attached... leaflets to homes across the village and they are asking for volunteers to give them a hand.
PCSO Kelsey Mumford, from the team explained: “We know that this is a busy time for many with people shopping for presents and getting ready for Christmas.
“Unfortunately it can also be a time for certain members of our society to turn to crime and so we want to give as many people as possible, advice as to what they can do to help prevent becoming victims.
“We will be delivering advice leaflets around Spondon and are asking for anyone that is willing to give up some time to help with the delivery.
“All volunteers will be provided with a map of the area with routes that have been handpicked by police, through local intelligence and areas that have a high amount of vulnerable households such as elderly complexes.
“The Vernon Arms on Locko Road in the village have kindly offered their premises as a base for the event and tea and coffee will be provided to all volunteers.”
Anyone wishing to help should meet at The Vernon Arms at 1pm, where they will be split into teams and provided with the leaflets and routes.
If you are interested in taking part please contact Kelsey using one of the following non-emergency contact methods.

Police officers in South Derbyshire are joining forces with our colleagues in Derbyshire Fire and Rescue and East Midlands Ambulance Service to hold a live mock incident in Swadlincote.
The event is being held at The Delph in the town centre on Saturday, December 8 and will involve a mock-up of a road traffic collision to show how the emergency services deal with the scene and warn of potential dangers.
Acting Sergeant Joe Stafford, who is co-ordinating the activity, explains...: “Since January this year there have been 47 fatal road traffic collisions in Derbyshire, five of which have been in South Derbyshire.
“Having spoken with my colleagues in the other emergency services we are keen to warn people of the common causes of such accidents to try and help prevent further heart-breaking incidents.
“We will have a mock-up of an accident in The Delph area of the town centre where people will be able to come along and watch a demonstration of how we all work together at such a scene.
“Officers from all the organisations will then be on-hand to discuss the dangers of the fatal-four to help people avoid being involved in such an incident.”
Samantha Westwell, Paramedic and Ambulance Operations Manager for Derbyshire, said: “Serious road traffic collisions can have a huge impact on a wide range of people – from the physical and mental impact on those injured and their loved ones, to the emotional impact on emergency service personnel, hospital staff and bystanders.
“Events such as this are an excellent way for us to demonstrate what happens in the aftermath of a serious road traffic collisions, and the decisions we can make as drivers and passengers to prevent such incidents from happening.”
Driving at excessive speed, under the influence of drink or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile telephone whilst driving are the four key causes of collisions involving death or serious injury in the UK.
The emergency services will be at The Delph from 10am with the demonstration due to start at 11am

An officer from our Derby City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team is asking for help to identify a woman suspected of stealing an 86-year-old woman’s purse.
The theft took place whilst the lady was sitting in the Swiss Cottage cafe on St Peter’s Street between 12.15pm and 1pm on Wednesday, October 10.
Her purse containing a bank card and around £20 was taken from her handbag and then the card was used in a nearby supermarket.
... The officer investigating the theft is PC Harry Wood, who said: “To steal from a lady of this age is such a heartless thing to do. To help us try and find who is responsible we would like to know who the person in the image is so we can talk to her about the theft.”
If you think you can help identify the woman in the image please make contact with Harry by using one of the following contact methods, quoting the reference number 18*486758
Facebook – send us a private message to /DerbyshireConstabulary Twitter – direct message our contact centre on @DerPolContact Website – complete the online contact form www.derbyshire.police.uk/Contact-Us. Phone – call us on 101.
You can also anonymously contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111 or by visiting www.crimestoppers-uk.org
PC Wood also urged others to be aware of such crimes; “At this time of year we know that the city and shopping centres get busier and people can be more distracted than normal. We would advise that you are always aware of your bag and that if possible it is kept so others can’t get to it.
“Don’t leave bags hanging off the backs of chairs in cafes or restaurants. Consider getting a set of bag bells that will ring if anyone tries to tamper with your bag, all of our Safer Neighbourhood teams have access to these to give away so get in touch with us if you would like some.”

... The marking by www.BikeRegister.com is usually £12 but is completed free by the team.
PCSO Ibrar Rafique (pictured), one of the officers on the team, said: “Last month’s event was well attended by students and residents alike and so we worked with the university to arrange another.”
The team will be in the atrium between 9.15am and 3.30pm. Anyone attending to have their cycle marked should bring with them some form of identification. Officers from our Derby City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team have said that the mobile police station will be back in the city during November.
They are keen to re-assure visitors to the city though that this is not due to a return of previous problems.
Sergeant Jamie Millard, who is in charge of the team, said: “People will be aware that earlier this year and during last year we were experiencing higher than normal levels of drug related anti-social behaviour.
... “Whilst the problems have not completely disappeared we are pleased with the feedback we have had from businesses and visitors alike, that Derby City Centre now feels a much safer and pleasant place to visit.
“One of the popular steps we took was to have the mobile police station in key locations, with officers available to talk to the public and of course be on hand to deal with any issues.
“As we now start to approach a key time for businesses in the city with Christmas approaching, we are keen to continue with this step and so visitors to the city will now see the mobile police station back in place on several dates during November. We will the re-assess for December .”
You can now follow the work of the City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team on social media on Twitter @DerbyCitySNT and https://www.facebook.com/DerbyCitySNT/
If you see the team out and about in the city please approach them, have a chat and perhaps even #CopASelfie.
