HFC IS TAKING A BREAK
We’ve got some news. After the Jake Xerses Fussell show in May, we’re going on an extended hiatus. I’ve been putting gigs on, in various guises, for my entire adult life and it’s time for me to take a fallow period.
It’s not been an easy decision but it’s down to a number of factors: difficulty finding suitable venues, agents asking for increasingly unrealistic fees*, Facebook limiting event invites and meddling with algorithms, my growing family and mo...st critically, dwindling ticket sales.
I’m not going to turn this into a think piece or diatribe about “THE STATE OF LIVE MUSIC”, the value we place on the arts or the ways we choose to spend our disposable income. We’ve all read enough of those. I just want to explain why.
I don’t do this to make money, but I can’t afford to keep losing money either. Previously, I’ve managed to pay artists, venues and sound engineers, cover the cost of printing and promotion, keep everyone in food and drink, and if it was an especially fruitful evening, buy a record out of what was left. Recently though, I’ve been subsidising shows out of my own pocket to make them happen.
The financial strain, the sleepless nights worrying about breaking even and not letting anyone down, and the evenings and weekends away from my family just aren’t sustainable any more.
This isn’t the end; there’s a couple of shows lined up for next year but after that I’ll be taking a break for a while. Who knows what comes after that.
If anyone has been in touch recently asking about a show, apologies for not getting back to you. This is why.
Thank you to all the venues that have hosted HFC over the last five years, everyone who has come along to any of our events (an even bigger thanks to our regulars, you know who you are!) anyone who has run the door, lent equipment, housed bands, ferried gear around, and most of all, thanks to all the artists who have performed. It’s been a real pleasure to work with you and for me now to be able to call you my friends.
I started HFC with the intention of bringing artists that I loved to Sheffield when no one else was. I’ve achieved what I set out to do and hosted some of my heroes and absolute favourites. There’s several promoters out there now who are already picking up the slack (I’m looking at you Nice Nice, Buds & Spawn and Waxy Blocks) so please take the time to check out what they’re doing.
Thanks again and please buy a ticket for these upcoming shows!
