Battle Focus: On our new Pals On the Somme Tour we look at the 'Pals' Battalions formed in WW1. Among them was the Sheffield City Battalion raised in the city in 1914.
Following the story of the Sheffield Pals we walk up the track to the battlefield at Serre, a Killing Field in 1916 where the Pals battalions suffered heavy losses from machine-gun fire on 1st July 1916: the First Day of the Battle of the Somme.
We then visit the Sheffield Memorial Park, seeing the remains of t...renches and shell holes. Purchased by the city after WW1, it was left as a memorial to all those who fought & died here in 1916.
Serre is a highly evocative corner of the Somme battlefields where the stories of 1916 come alive. Here the Pals lie side by side, on the ground where they fell more than a century ago in the Great War.
