Sheffield Children'S Hospital Nhs And Charity Description

Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is one of only four dedicated children’s hospital trusts in the UK and provides integrated healthcare for children and young people, including community and mental health care as well as acute and specialist services.

We see children from 0-16 in most cases and in some cases up to 18.

We provide a full range of services for residents of Sheffield and South Yorkshire as well as specialised services for patients from further afield.

The Children's Hospital Charity exists to make an extraordinary hospital even better.

We keep our specialist services special; providing the best equipment your money can buy, opening new facilities and funding vital research to change lives tomorrow.

We make the clinical more comfortable; transforming the hospital space and adding the little touches that make a big difference to families.

Together with all our supporters and staff, we do it for the kids.

Friday inspiration! Chase Gardiner was born prematurely at just 27 weeks in July last year. Due to his young age, he required highly-specialist neo-natal transport from the Embrace Ambulance Service.
Thanks to the care he received, Chase now only attends appointments every six months at our hospital. The youngster’s good health prompted his Dad Daniel to give something back, which is when he saw our Skydive challenge on social media.
Daniel explained: “If you’d have asked me... before Chase was born, I’d have been one of those people saying ‘you won’t get me doing that’. But compared to what he has been through, jumping out of a plane didn’t seem so bad”.
Daniel raised over £2,000 for the Embrace Ambulance Service and thoroughly enjoyed the experience:
“I couldn’t stop grinning afterwards. It’s definitely one of the best things I have ever done" he continued.
The next Skydive for our hospital takes place in April. To register your interest, visit: https://www.tchc.org.uk/events/

Nominate your favourite by visiting our website: https://www.sheffieldchildrens.nhs.uk/abo ut-us/star-awards/
The ...Sheffield Children’s Star Awards have been running for more than eight years, and each year children have awarded this special prize to staff who went the extra mile for them.
This year the Star Awards have been sponsored by NHS Professionals. Eva travels 1,300 miles every year to come to Sheffield Children’s for treatment.
She loves music, dancing and going to school even though she has Osteogenesis imperfecta type 3, also known as ‘brittle bones’. When she was little, even sneezing could cause her thin bones to fracture. Eva flies over from Belfast to visit our specialist bone medicine service with her mum and dad for three days every twelve weeks.
Her mum said: “It was unknown before we came here. People were s...o frightened because Eva’s condition was so severe. The team at Sheffield Children’s are really superb, they taught us how to manage it. This is the best place to come; it’s where the experts are.
“Eva is like an X-man, there was a 1 in 10,000 chance of this mutation happening during pregnancy. There was no history of it in the family.”
When Eva was six weeks old, her mum and dad were able to hold her for the first time in our High Dependency Unit. Over the years since then she has had surgery to fit rods in her legs to help straighten them and treatment with the bone and dental teams. We’re looking forward to seeing you again soon Eva!

If you’re looking for some Monday motivation…
13-year-old George Harrison was a very sporty teenager, playing football and squash several times a week and spending his evenings running to keep fit.
However, on Mother’s Day last year, he began feeling ill after a family meal out. His parents initially believed the sickness was due to food poisoning, and took George to their local GP.
... He was then transferred to our hospital and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. Each year, around 70 children aged up to 14 years old are diagnosed with the condition in the UK.
While George focused on his recovery, his family began fundraising to help transform the Cancer ward which had become their home, raising an incredible £10,000!
Best of all, George entered remission in October and celebrated by ringing the ward bell! You can watch the moving moment here.

Wow! What an incredible LEGO creation!
Ellie built this LEGO MRI Scanner in memory of her dad, Jack, for our hospital to help staff show patients what will happen when they go for an MRI scan.
She handed it over to our Head of Radiology, Sara Elliott yesterday so they can help put patient's minds at ease before their scan. The LEGO bed even wheels in and out!
... How amazing is that. Thank you Ellie!

Forget the grand prix – our car collection just expanded!
Now even more young patients have the opportunity to drive to theatre in style. Children can calm their nerves before surgery by going for a spin in the mini electric cars. Our first mini Tesla car has been very popular and we can’t wait to get this one on the road.
Thanks to the the Tesla Owners Group UK, and the logistical work of Deryn Harvey, over 120 mini cars have been sent all across the UK. What a great feat! Here’s George showing us how it’s done.

On the last day of 2018, we're revisiting one of the most special moments of the year.
In August, our Cancer Ward held a wedding for the mum and dad of one of our patients. It was a special day for the whole family, and the first wedding we've had in the hospital!

We're nearly at the end of our Farewell 2018 Flashbacks, which means it's time to relive the day that Cooper taught us all how to Floss in May.
Everyone got involved, including Dr Xand from CBBC's Operation Ouch, although some staff took a little longer to catch on!

We're always looking to make your child's time at Sheffield Children's as easy as possible, so we were very proud to open up three new wards in April.
Since then, over 4000 children have been treated on them. Have you had a chance to see what they look like yet?

User

This year, we launched our new appeal to expand the Emergency Department, transform the Cancer Ward and build a brand new Helipad.
To show you why this is needed, we asked Myla to tell her story in October.

It's time for our second Farewell 2018 Flashback.
Just last month we loved seeing James' face as he had fun in a speedy mini Tesla. He zoomed to his surgery thanks to the donation from members of the UK Tesla Owners Group.

2018 has been another exciting year and over the next few days we're sharing some of our favourite 2018 Flashbacks.

We’ve had cause to use the hospital for both our children, the care has always been absolutely amazing. The staff are so friendly and empathise, everything’s always been explained well to us and the play staff are brilliant with the kids. Thank you to all the amazing staff at Sheffield Children’s Hospital

We had such a positive experience here last week. Everyone was just superb. The staff were great, everywhere was so well planned out for the children and certainly didn’t feel like a hospital environment for a little person. The fold away beds for parents are such a brilliant idea and non intrusive. My son is recovering brilliantly. Thank you.

So incredibly thankful for such an incredible hospital as the children's! My son had an accident after school yesterday and from the time of the accident to going to A&E and getting home again it was 3hrs, which was amazing to start with. The staff were all so lovely, professional and really made my son feel comfortable even in his pain. We were back in to the theatre admission unit this morning for stitches under general and again the staff were kind, professional and really looked after my son and us! From the nurses, surgeons, play staff, receptionist, anesthesiologist, recovery staff were all fantastic and especially the porter who I believe was called John, he was just lovely and made sure my son was comfortable and preoccupied the whole time and even made sure I was ok once I left the room. I can't thank you enough or say enough good things!!

Sheffield children's hospital are amazing. My 18mth old nephew was diagnosed with meningococcal septaceamia and was in intensive care for 3 weeks. The staff worked tirelessly day and night to keep him alive and to give home the best chance of recovery. Thankfully he pulled through with all the help of the doctors and nurses. We will forever be in your debt. Keep up the phenomenal work that you do for all our childrens

Incredible place with incredible staff. Our son Oliver was admitted here after throwing up green vomit which they consultant thought could be a sign of Hirschsprung Disease. They did lots of bloods and lots of checks on him and they came back all clear. Little one is still here and has been since 06/03/18 but is on the mend, just finishing his antibiotics and fluids then he'll be back home. The team in Neonatal Surgical Unit are incredible and do a truly fantastic job. Thank to everyone there for looking after our son, what would we do without our brilliant National Health Service

User

If it weren't for the five Teams of amazing, diligent, intelligent, caring and SENSITIVE Specialists here I have no doubt my daughter would not be here today. She is still quite poorly but thank GOD recovering from the hideous disease we have come to know as HLH (Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis). I cannot ever think of a way to thank you all. Also thanks to Great Ormond Street, Leeds and Newcastle who were working closely with Sheffield to help save her life. You are all amazing and deserve far more credit that you ever seem to receive. Extra special thanks to Dr Shackley, Melody, Sabu, Cathy, Dr Ruud, all the nurses on M2 (especially all the Emma's, Abi, Jess, Louise and Matt), Sadaf, the support workers (especially Suz and Becca) and the cleaners who keep the place as free of germs as humanly possible. We are all incredibly lucky for the NHS indeed and nobody should ever take it for granted. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts x

I have nothing but praise for this hospital especially Mr Sinha the way he has been with my daughter Ebony over the last two years has been nothing but outstanding. He is her hero and has always gone above and beyond. I can not thank him enough. Ebony is old enough now to be leaving the children's hospital to be going over to the royal hallamshire I am just grateful she will still be under the great care of Mr Sinha. Thank you so much.

User

I can't praise the staff enough, my Grandson had tonsil and adenoid removal and gromits put in just over two weeks ago. Using the new procedure (I think its called coblation) he has recovered very quickly with minimum pain and discomfort. Every member of staff was caring and helpful, he had one overnight stay and was monitored carefully and able to go home the next morning. My daughter has taken him to a local hospital since birth and waited for over six years to get help with his hearing issues, finally discharging him and going to Sheffield, after one visit the consultant said he needed surgery and was booked in and the operation carried out within 6 weeks, fantastic result, cant thank them enough

My son has just come home after a 5 day stay.he was upset and worried knowing he was missing out xmas festivities at home and School..however the charitable organisations didn’t let his stay go un-noticed..on day 1 he had carol singers round his bed, this really cheered him up and made him smile, then day 3 the scouts came round and delivered a handmade knitted teddy to all children on his ward,a gift he will forever treasure..massive thanks to all who take their time out to make the children smile xxx

I am proud to work for the NHS and proud to use the NHS. Free and high class healthcare at point of service. Let's do all we can to safeguard this honoured and vital institution
