Stag Works which backs on to Portland Works contains the largest concentration of music studios in the North of England and for 35 years has been at the heart of the music industry in Sheffield, earning the city tens of millions of pounds every year through royalties to Sheffield artists. From the Arctic Monkeys and Reverend and the Makers, back to Def Leppard, Stag Works has played host to many of the city's major music acts and acts as a nursery for growing the new music of Sheffield.

Portland Works which backs onto Stag Works is in the centre of the John St Conservation Area, created because both buildings are 'the most significant and exemplary metal trades buildings in the city ' (part of the City Council bid for conservation status). Portland Works is a thriving, 140 year old center for small mainly metal and wood craft based businesses, one of the last bases in Sheffield for its renowned 'little mesters'. It also houses art and music studios.
