As you responsibly put your jars, cans and plastics into your recycling bin, have you ever wondered what happens next? This interesting article was written by John Mannion from his personal experience. I found the road sweepings particularly interesting ~ let me know what you think 😁
LANDFILL. I work for the biggest privately owned waste haulier in the UK. The only stuff we take to landfill now is either inert waste or the incinerator has broken down. Many landfills with an e...xpected lifespan of 10 years are now projecting 25 years left!
INCINERATORS These do not just burn waste (black bag waste) but they generate electricity. Ferrous scrap is magnetically recovered from the ashes which, in turn, are graded and sold on as aggregates to the building industry.
PLASTICS. Recent over production (we are too good at recycling plastics and supply is outstripping demand. Demand will increase as infrastructure for using recycled plastics catches up) has lead to buyers tightening their requirements. Currently only yhe best grade LDPE film is economically viable. It is all well and good saying we must recycle, but what can we do if nobody wants to buy it? I'm sure a councillor somewhere will have all the answers, but be aware that last time I looked, Utopia was not an EU member state.
GENERAL WASTE lower grade plastics and other contaminated or uneconomic mixed blue bin waste is shredded and baled before export to Germany and Scandanavia as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) to power electricity generators and also used in the cement production process. Cemex in Rugby had the choice of buying coke or building a huge RDF plant and then being paid to burn RDF!
FOOD WASTE is taken to BioGen plants, usually tucked away on a farm somewhere, they can often be seen from main roads, they look like roungd green slurry tanks but have a domed tarpaulin sheet on the roof. The waste food is digested by enzymes to produce methane which is then pumped into the gas mains system.
CARD AND PAPER. This has been recycled for decades. A cardboard box can be recycled 7 times. Each time it is recycled the fibres break down lowerering its usability each time. eventually it ends up as an eggbox
ROAD SWEEPINGS AND GULLY SLUDGE Yes I even carry this and to be honest it is one of the better paying fill in jobs I do after my regular cardboard work. It is sorted through separator drums. The gravel is reused for suface dressing the roards, sand is rcovered as are plastics and metals. The rest goes to compost.

This week I’ve repurposed my old pasting table into a double sided blackboard to promote my beeswax and soya wax wraps ~ the sustainable replacement for plastic food wrap. *100% natural so no nasties will leach into your food *Keeps food super fresh as the natural ingredients and cotton fabric allow your food to breathe rather than sweat. *Clingy but in a good way ~ the pine resin and wax makes the wraps easy to mould to the shape of your container with the warmth from your h...ands. * Reusable ~ simply wash in cold water *Biodegradable~ once it’s used to the max, simply pop it in your compost.
