Join us as we celebrate the launch of local poet Kate Carruthers Thomas's brand new collection Navigation.
Addressing experiences of displacement and connection to both place and to people, the poems in Navigation traverse landscape and memory, mingling the two. From the sediments of natural structures to the erosion of memory, Kate Carruthers Thomas uses beautifully controlled metaphor to explore the tensions between familiarity and strangeness, whether in how we perceive the world or in the changing dynamics relationship. Poised, honed and sharply observed, with a feeling for what goes on beneath the surface of things, Navigation is an outstanding debut collection.
Tickets cost £2.

Becky Chambers was, for a second time, an absolute bloody delight and we are so lucky to have had her again. Thank you to everyone who made it tonight, and enjoy the new book!!

One final reminder about our evening event with Becky Chambers this Friday! barely a handful of tickets left. I just wanted to chime in with a review now the book is officially published.
What can I say? You may have read my (liam's) reviews of her first two books, The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, and A Closed and Common Orbit. If you have read either of those books, you know what to expect, if not...what the hell are you playing at?? This third outing into Becky's galax...y is yet another delightfully charming, life-affirming story. It's not often that a Sci-Fi novel can offer a future you'd realistically want to live in, but Becky has an optmistic vision of the future, not one of conflict and struggle, but of a Galactic Community. Record of a Spaceborn Few poses many big questions, set against the backdrop of the Exodan Fleet - Humans who left a ruined Earth to head for the stars; their original goal to colonise another world, a goal they never achieved, and now they simply maintain The Fleet. It shows us an almost alien culture, so many parts of life we take for granted, adapted to be sustainable in a closed, artificial environment. This time we follow a large cast on unrelated, yet necessarily connected characters, who together show us their tiny world we don't know but can completely relate to. I can't recommend her three Wayfarer books enough, and I don't want to ruin anything about this new one. All I can say is she is required reading, not just for Sci-Fi fans, but for anyone and everyone.

July’s Fiction book of the Month comes with a trigger warning. It’s a dark and powerful story of love, abuse, survival and hope, set against Californian woodland, following fourteen year old Turtle Alveston. Not an easy story to read but some books aren’t meant to be, and it asks important questions. Don’t forget to get your free Coffee when you buy any of our Books of the Month too.

Wait, wait, wait... so IS football coming home then or not? Should we put the kettle on for it?

User

Gosh, it’s quiet today. Is there something going on somewhere??

We visit the store fairly regularly and always find staff are super helpful! There's nothing quite like visiting a good book store in person. The only problem is trying to leave without buying way more books than I'd originally planned!

User

Visited at the weekend with the kids and loved the children's section! So much choice and fun things to do. The staff member on the till was so friendly and helpful!

User

This is the type of book shop you could spend the day in. Cake and coffee whilst reading the books on the tables .

User

They've got a climbing frame and slides in the store - how fantastic (kids only!!)

User

Such a lovely shop! The staff who served me were so nice and informative, had great info on the Sarah J. Maas signing. Happily shop there again when I visit Sheff.

Last Saturday was looking round the sci-fi and fantasy sections for a new author to try. Member of staff recommend The Lies of Locke Lamora after finding out what sort books I've read in the past. Would just like to say this was a fantastic recommendation and I'm really enjoying it.

User

I love this book shop! All the staff are super friendly and very knowledgeable about the books in store. I also love how the cafe is set up like a proper independent cafe in the sense that it supports local products as much as is possible. It's also got a lovely atmosphere to sit and relax being surrounded by books. :) And it's affordable. Thank you!

User

I love the newly refurbished coffee shop, it's excellent and will become my regular coffee shop.

User

User

First visit today, friendly service, lovely coffee and really liked the light airy feel to the place .

User

What's happened to your slide?! One of us used to be able to take it in turns to browse, while the other watched our daughter. Now we don't linger and haven't bought half as much from you.

User

Didn't get a coffee because there wasn't any clean tables.

I've given a mixed review as I received really poor and really great customer service in the same visit. I love going into Waterstones for a wonder and to see the books that are on the promo tables. I was particularly taken by your valentines table with a book called Soppy on there. As I started flicking through it and giggling out loud to my partner saying that's us, a lovely gentleman talked to me about how cute the book is. Amazing customer service from this gentleman, he was very lovely and I overheard him on the till being equally lovely to the customers he served explaining about the stamps on a card to collect. As I wondered around more and then was finally ready to buy my Soppy book and another book I had picked up, the lovely gentleman had gone and there was only a lady near by. As I waited at the till, she eventually came over and sat on a till but never greeted me or called me over so I went to ask if she was serving. She took my books off me and scanned them, and I had to ask for a bag as I didn't have one on me and she never asked if I needed one. Never once did she attempt to speak to me, and she simply stamped this bit of paper and handed it to me with no explanation after I had paid. She had called next before I was gone or had chance to ask about the card that she stamped as I wanted to know more. After the amazing conversation and service I had received from the gentleman it was a bit of a let down to have this service from this lady, and completely left me annoyed as I left the shop. I would suggest you retrain your staff that, especially in a book shop, customer service is key to making the atmosphere and experience, and that every interaction be that even on tills could be with a smile and the right attitude that would make people return time after time. If I had this gentleman serve me at the till this would be a 5* review, however this lady completely let your team and your store down. As a book work I should not be leaving a book shop disappointed, and it just doesn't make me want to pay in store prices when I know things are cheaper online if I don't get basic common courtesy customer service.
