Afon Taf High School is a comprehensive high school for pupils aged 11 to 16, based in the village of Troed-y-rhiw in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, Wales. It serves a large catchment area of surrounding villages in the Merthyr valley, from Abercanaid & Pentrebach in the north to Bedlinog in the south. OriginsThe school opened in September 1967. Pupils from Quakers Yard Grammar School, Troedyrhiw Secondary School and the Pantglas Senior School in Aberfan transferred to the school. Notable alumni Steve Speirs Huw Lewis Lloyd DanielsRenovation - 2014-2017In 2014 Afon Taf began work on a £12 million renovation of the whole school. The way that it worked to allow pupils to still be educated is to allocate small sections of the school at one time. They first started by the lower end near the north hall and renovated it with new Science, Music, Art, Welsh, Informational Technology (IT), Food Technology, Engineering, and Textile rooms. This has taken One year to finish and the next section was the main foyer and the previous food Technology, Maths, gym and other rooms. Now with the new corridors and foyer, The changes are dramatic. The foyer has a bigger appeal and still has the all-important 'Prefect Stairs' at the show, and the new corridor now hosts a unisex toilet both up and down stairs along new Maths, English, History, French and Offices for Head of years and the Deputy's head.
