This beautiful girl had been handed into our Risca branch today. Unfortunately she's is not microchipped so we are unable to reunite her with her owner. She has been found wandering around crosskeys college and our vet estimates she is around 2-3 years old. If anyone needs any more information please contact us on 01633 619971.

Poor Iggy came in this week with a fishing hook in his leg. Our amazing team at Alphavet Langstone quickly admitted him and took x-rays to see how close the hook was to his bone. They then successful removed the hook and cleaned the area to prevent infection. We're pleased to say that Iggy is making a fantastic recovery so far! 😁🐱

With the heat rising this weekend, it is very important to make sure that your pets are comfortable and lots of cool water is available. This article from the RSPCA is full of ways to keep your fur babies cool on a hot day!

Since 2014, we have treated hundreds of pets with K-Laser therapy. This is a non-invasive treatment for your pet which can work to improve mobility, relieve pain, reduce swelling and promote faster healing. The treatment is completely painless, and there is no need for sedation or restrain; a lot of our patients find it very calming! It works on a cellular level by increasing circulation, attracting nutrients and oxygen to the damaged area, creating an optimal healing environment. K-Laser works wonderfully to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, but we can also use it to aid quick recovery after surgery and to reduce swelling.
This handsome chap is Ollie who comes to see Judith for his K-Laser treatment, to help his mobility.

At alphavet we are proud to offer laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for our clients, as well as a referrals.
Keyhole surgery uses specialist instruments and a small camera inserted through three tiny incisions; this allows for the greatest precision and minimal invasion.
We most commonly use this technique for laparoscopic spaying, which only removes the ovaries, compared to a conventional spay which removes both the uterus and ovaries. Keyhole surgery can also be used for ret...ained testicle removal for male dogs, or even some orthopaedic procedures, such as an arthroscopy.
So what are the benefits? Well keyhole surgery allows for quicker recovery, as the incisions are much smaller, and, in turn, your pet’s level of discomfort will be greatly reduced. This can also reduce the risk of infection. If you would like to know more about laparoscopic surgeries, please feel free to ask!

This is Lexi, a 2 year old German Shepard. She was presented to Alphavet after it was noticed she had become lethargic and was retching. On examination, Lexi was particularly tender around her abdomen which made alarm bells ring. She was quickly admitted, pain relief was administered and radiographs performed.
Unfortunately, the X-Rays showed that Lexi had a 'gastric dilation volvulus' aka a 'GDV'. Our amazing team acted quickly to perform surgery to rectify this.
GDV's can b...e quite common in large breed dogs and occur when the stomach fills with gas as well as rotating and twisting. It is a condition that is life threatening and needs to be acted upon quickly. It is NOT recommended to exercise large breed dogs after a meal and ensure they eat their food slowly to prevent the the risk of GDVs.
We are very pleased to say that Lexi is making an excellent recovery! We are sharing Lexi's story to make you aware to the potential dangers of GDVs, and what to look out for.
