Understanding Mental Illness
Today I must applaud Denise Welch – actress and panellist of the popular daytime TV show, ‘Loose Women’ for releasing a video detailing her experiences of living with depression, which she labels, the ‘Unexpected Visitor’.
Here I would like to share my experiences as a Person Centred Therapist, dealing with clients suffering from mental illness:

The Addictive Personality....... Is there such a thing?
Being snowed in like so many people today, the popular lunchtime programme Loose Women caught my attention.... primarily because they were conducting an interview with Paul Gascoigne. Paul Gascoigne, 50, was born May 27, 1967 and is a former England football star. Paul was a highly skilled professional football player who gained 57 caps playing for England. He was hailed as one of the most naturally gifted footballers of...

Compartments of Our Minds Whilst on a long flight recently the compartment above the passenger seat suddenly flew open whilst the plane was taking off, and the contents, including large flight bags nearly fell out. They would have landed on the passenger below and probably hurt him. Fortunately they stayed safe until a crew member was able to leave his seat and re-arrange the contents before closing the door and making it safe again. This morning I was reminded of this and it... raised the thought of how many times this situation happens in our lives.... We all have compartments in our lives,in our homes, and in our minds. We use compartments to store........ some are used for things that we know we are going to need later and some we use to lock things away.... maybe memories of good things and of bad things. This is man's natural way of organising his things. However sometimes the use of compartments doesn't always work out so well. Why? Because sometimes we shut away problems, concerns, and worries that could be brought out, explored or considered safely in a trusting environment. Many people do not do this because they don't feel comfortable talking about it, or because they feel that they cannot be assured of confidentiality. Unfortunately holding onto emotions that have been shut away in a compartment run the risk of the door suddenly opening and the contents spilling out....just like on the plane. How many times do we know of situations where someone has 'blown their top'. Talking to someone professionally is for some the light at the end of a tunnel, the help on the long journey that we need . I hope this reaches whoever needs to hear it.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Now that the clocks have gone back I wonder how many people are starting to feel a little low, or as we call it ‘under the weather’. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can affect between 3/6 people in 100 in the UK. The symptoms include lethargy, depression, mood swings, comfort eating and social and relationship problems. SAD can really impact on someone’s life, often bringing on emotions of hopelessness, and despair.... There are many treatments that can be hugely beneficial to someone battling against SAD such as talking therapies, CBT and Light Therapy (although not usually available on the NHS). Some people find St John’s Wort beneficial but as with any medication, taking herbal remedies alongside prescriptive medication should ALWAYS be discussed with your G.P Of course, having a supportive family/friends is an advantage when dealing with SAD as often the sufferer blames themselves for the emotions they are experiencing. If you feel that you, or someone you love is suffering from SAD, please encourage them to seek the help of a G.P or Counsellor (or both).
