Although the 'Archdiocese of Cardiff' was only founded in 1916, it's history goes back further. Following the laws of 1829 relaxing the penal laws from the Reformation, Vicars Apostolic were appointed by the Holy See within the U. K. The Western District included what is now the Archdiocese of Cardiff.

In 1840 the Western district was divided and Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Wales became the Welsh district with Bishop Brown OSB as vicar apostolic. Later further changes were made to the Welsh district and the diocese of Newport and Menevia was set up as a suffragan see of Westminster diocese. In 1895 the boundaries changed again, and the diocese of Newport was redefined as comprising Glamorgan, Monmouth and Hereford.

In 1916 the Cardiff Province was established, comprising the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Cardiff with diocese of Menevia as a suffragan see. Finally in 1987, Pope John Paul II divided the Archdiocese of Cardiff in two and formed the Diocese of Wrexham in the North of Wales, giving the boundaries we have today.

Message from Archbishop George: In solidarity with the Holy Father who is not celebrating a Mass of Chrism in Holy Week, the Bishops of England and Wales have decided to postpone this Mass until a later date. Should the current situation allow, the Celebration of Priesthood on the Feast of the Sacred Heart might be an opportunity to hold this Mass later in the year.

FINAL CLARIFICATION: On closure of chruches:
Following the instruction that the Prime Minister gave last night, there has been an inconsistent message from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government regarding the opening of churches. In the published guidelines, it states that “places of worship should remain open for solitary prayer.”
The instruction is very clear on the occasions when someone can leave home:
... * Shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible. * One form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household. * Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person. * Travelling to and from work, but only where this absolutely cannot be done from home.
None of these four specific reasons for leaving home concur with the visiting of a church for solitary prayer.
The Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales have sought clarification on the confusion and a senior civil servant agreed a mistake was made.
Therefore churches are to remain CLOSED for the benefit of others and stopping infection.
