Tune into The One Show tonight, Wednesday 17 October, to find out if our 200 year old Ballymenoch Oak has been voted NI Tree of the Year!
The Ballymenoch Oak was shortlisted by the Woodland Trust in the search for Northern Ireland’s Tree of the Year 2018: voting has now closed and we thank everyone who took the time to cast their vote.
The tree is thought to be among the largest oaks in the country. This magnificent Turkey oak stands 27 metres high and is thought to have been... planted by Thomas Gregg, who bought Ballymenoch House and its impressive grounds in 1802. The house actually burnt down in 1914 and, while the origin of the fire was not proven, there were suggestions of Suffragette involvement.
Fingers crossed for this evening: tune in from 7pm to find out the winners!

Congratulations to six of our local food and drink producers who have picked up awards at the prestigious Irish Food Awards Blas na hÉirean in Dingle.
Clandeboye Estate Yoghurt, Glastry Farm Ice Cream and Mash Direct all picked up gold awards in their respective categories, with A Slice of Heaven, Noisy Snacks and Springmount Farm Poultry picking up bronze.
Ards and North Down Borough Council recently launched its new Food Destination Development Plan, building on the area’...s status as a leading food and drink destination and recognising the craftsmanship of its food and drink producers.
As part of this plan, the Council is hosting a Food Programme in partnership with South Eastern Regional College. 25 students from the college will visit a number of food and drink producers over the next few months, starting earlier today a trip to Glastry Farm.

A new exhibition entitled; 'A War Encapsulated in Stone - Praeger's Memorials' has opened in The Community Gallery at North Down Museum.
To honour those who died during The Great War, memorials were erected in towns and villages across Europe and the UK during the 1920s.
Local artist Sophia Rosamund Praeger worked on ten such memorials across Northern Ireland. This exhibition is a testament to her and the local men who died.
... The exhibition runs until 11 November. Admission is free during museum opening hours.
