Just wanted to showcase some of the gorgeous ingredients that go into my ’Lavender Dusk' soap. Shea butter and coconut oil make up the 'fats' in this recipe. Some soap makers use lard or palm oil as the fats in their recipe, my soaps are vegan friendly and palm free. I formulate my recipes differently because I do not use palm oil or lard, I need to use a lot of Shea and coconut oil to make a nice hard bar. This also gives the soap great lather and a silky feeling on the skin.... You won't find any synthetic ready made bases here, handmade from scratch using the cold process method of soap making. To the fats I add sweet almond oil, olive and castor oil. These are 'saponified' with lye (a high alkaline salt) and then left to cure for one month. During this time the soaps lose some of their water content and the PH comes down. Making a mild hard bar of soap! I colour my soaps with herbs or clay which I have infused in oil, it's amazing the colours you can achieve. I colour this batch with alkanet root and pink clay which produces a pale lilac. Pure luxury, these bars make an ideal replacement for synthetic shower gel.

Finally some soap making! Back by popular demand my Lavender Dusk bar. I have funked up the recipe a bit and added extra Shea butter,, added some cute texture to the top and sprinkled cornflowers that my good friend brought me back from her hometown in Somaliland. It smells so so good, a combo of fresh lavender and heady ylang ylang with a hint of cinnamon and cedarwood which gives deapth to the aroma. I colour this batch with alkanet root, other soap makers will appreciat...e the difficulty of achieving a blue/purple shade! I love this colour but it did fade to lilac as the pH changed after the initial pour. I just love waiting to see the final result, it really takes on a life of its own. It's fab working with natural colours and ingredients from nature. So what is the difference between cold process soap & commercial shop bought soap?? What is cold process soap.. Commercial soap is actually detergent, it is made from chemical ingredients such as surfactants which attract dirt, foaming agents, hardeners and fragrance. These soaps tend to be marketed as 'gentle' and 'natural' but this is very far from the truth. They rely heavily on clever advertising. Enough said about that! Cold process soap is the old fashioned way of makin...g soap, it is the reaction between an exact amount of fats and a high alkaline salt called lye which makes soap! This is real soap,, I use at least a litre of both coconut and olive oil in my large batch soap and this is just for starters. These are the 'fats' others include shea butter, sweet almond, castor, rice bran, hemp etc..(My soaps are vegan so I never use lard or animal fats, I also never use palm oil because millions of miles of rainforest are being felled to grow this cheap fast growing crop.) Some artisan soap makers add fragrance oils to their soap so this is something to watch out for, also synthetic colourants. Truly 'natural' cold process soap is scented with essential oils and coloured with herbs and clays there are no synthetic additives or preservatives. There is no 'lye' in the finished soap, this gets 'saponified' by the fats which is what remains, essentially a solid bar which foams and cleanses when water is added. Clever eh!! There is also a natural glycerine content in cp soap which softens the skin. Hope this is a bit informative. Gypsie Rose solid shampoo bars..Inspired by the masterful combination of wild herbs used by the gypsies. Legend has it that the early gypsies formulated it as a skin tonic and claimed it to be a cure all. I use this combo of herbs and make an infusion which I add to the nourishing oils and butters. LOVE how this batch turned out!! Creamy Calendula & Cocoa soap. Stamped and all ready for the curing rack. I have upscaled my recipes and I am making bigger batches, this was heavy to pour. It came out great, so chuffed. I have added coconut milk to the recipe for extra creaminess. Essential oils of Bergamot, Patchouli and Lavender are reminiscent of a fragrant tea house. Calendula is super soothing for the skin, this one is suitable for the most delicate skin types.
