About Aubergine Cafe And Events Cic

Aubergine Café is the vision of a small team of autistic adults to empower other autistic people through accessible environments and innovative working practices while providing ethically sourced, nutritious and affordable plant-based food to local people. Aubergine Café was first established in 2018 and opened in 2019 as a fully vegan café owned and run by autistic people. Selena built Aubergine as a space for autistic and neurodivergent people to find employment, community, and a welcoming space for them to exist in their full selves. We also offer an online program of events for autistic and neurodivergent adults in Wales, including life skills such as cooking and cycling, and arts classes such as abstract art and mobile-making. Simultaneously, we have been running weekly peer support groups and crafting socials online, which are low-pressure spaces for neurodivergent people to come together and get support or work on ongoing projects. We have received funding to contract autistic artists and practitioners to run these classes and events for autistic and neurodivergent adults. Our business model is unique across the UK. Being autistic-owned and run means that we are a truly inclusive space for autistic and other neurodivergent people. We know what neurodivergent people need because we experience these same needs, and our whole staff exists in community with other neurodivergent people. We value all areas of neurodivergent existence and apply this to the way our staff and customers engage with each other. Staff are able to fully embrace their neurodivergent traits, from stimming to silent working to wearing comfortable clothing. We expand to disability advocacy, community, and employment, and we have heard from countless neurodivergent people across Wales that we have expanded their community and provided new opportunities and skills. Our online programming has reached neurodivergent people across Wales - We are a unique and necessary resource for so many. The breadth and depth of our reach for neurodivergent people for this work has never yet been achieved in Wales, and we are a resource for so many who would not have had this before. We ensure that we pay all our staff, artists, and programme facilitators a living wage, which is important when so many autistic people are unemployed or underpaid. By properly paying each individual, we ensure that their work is valued to the full extent, and that we are valuing them as a whole person, including, and not in spite of, their autistic identity. While we are a small team, we have helped ensure that neurodivergent and disabled people across Wales can have a plethora of opportunities to maintain community and develop new skills. The great success of these programmes is testament to the need for neurodivergent community-building by and for neurodivergent people, and we are proud to be able to facilitate that
