Mama’s Broke is a powerful folk duo that deliver a compelling performance with heart and raw energy. Although highly influenced by their Canadian roots, Lisa and Amy are based out of nowhere and everywhere.
Their two strong voices blend to create haunting harmonies, while they artfully juggle fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin, and incorporate traditional dance and foot percussion into their performance. Their original – and often dark – compositions push the boundaries of tr...adition and the constraints of genre. Drawing from old-time, Quebecois, blues, punk, Celtic, Balkan and doom metal, they create a soundscape that is both familiar and new.
Since forming the band in 2014, Mama’s Broke has been gaining momentum fast; having already completed two European, and several Canadian and U.S. tours. They have performed in a wide range of venues, from circus shows in New Orleans, to pirate ships in Amsterdam, to concert halls in Ireland, to theatres in Brooklyn. In this way, they stay true to the transient nature of folklore, as they travel the world sharing and collecting song.
“Multi-instrumentalists Amy Lou and Lisa Maria are masterful songwriters who sing their lyrics as incantations …twin prophets who bend our ear effortlessly and beckon us ever forward.” — Kaia Kater
“... a contemporary offering that's as dark as December.” — Penguin Eggs

Up and coming folk talent from Orkney’s finest; Merlyn Driver https://youtu.be/63MGAP0lMps
Born and raised on Orkney, Merlyn Driver was brought up on a smallholding without mains electricity and didn’t go to school until his early teens. This unconventional upbringing continues to inform his music. From a young age, Merlyn was exposed to the folk music of Orkney via his older sister Fiona, who is a traditional fiddler. Wider influences are just as important to him, with... Paul Simon’s South African-influenced album Graceland sparking Merlyn’s passion for music from far-flung places as a child.
After moving to the Scottish mainland to study anthropology at the University of St Andrews, Merlyn travelled to the Norwegian Arctic in 2011 to study the music of the indigenous Sámi people. He was particularly interested in their traditional vocal art form called joik. Merlyn’s first trip to ‘Sápmi’ – the Sámi word for their homeland – not only gave birth to his love affair with joik, but also fuelled his interest in exploring the connections between music and nature.
Merlyn is now based in London, where he recently completed a Masters in ethnomusicology at SOAS, University of London. His work explored the traditional preference for rough textures and ‘buzzy’ timbres in West African music, long noted as a key musical feature throughout the continent. Inspired by his ongoing research into the ‘buzz aesthetic’, Merlyn recently co-designed a unique percussion desk for live performances, and has adapted a West African buzzing rattle (similar to those traditionally used on many different African string instruments) for use on his guitar.
Merlyn Driver’s debut EP was released in May 2017 and has received national radio play from BBC 6 Music and BBC Radio Scotland. It was produced by BBC Folk Awards winner Ben Walker (Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, Oh Sister, Jinnwoo) and Colin Bass (9Bach, Etran Finatawa, Krar Collective) and features guest appearances by the Sámi joiker Marja Mortensson, Michael Wilbur from the Brooklyn-based band Moon Hooch, and several other collaborators from the UK and further afield.
Tickets £10 available directly from the Cafe, online at http://www.wegottickets.com/event/454475 (10% admin fee applies) or on the door on the night.

Long time favourite Martin Harley returns to Blue Sky with his incredible blues slide guitar sound. https://youtu.be/bwT0aLIjbHg
Martin Harley is a supremely talented acoustic roots and blues guitarist, singer and songwriter with a burgeoning global reputation. The new studio album ‘Static In The Wires’ was released in February 2017, it was produced by Martin & Daniel Kimbro and recorded in Nashville. It follows the critically acclaimed ‘Live At Southern Ground. A ‘Spellb...inding 50 minutes’ as The Observer put it. It is Martin’s 7th album to date and the 2nd to feature Daniel Kimbro as well as 14 time Grammy winner Jerry Douglas (Ray Charles, Eric Clapton, Dolly Parton), Derek Mixon (Chris Stapleton, Sam Lewis) and Micah Hulsher (Alabama Shakes). The album was tracked live at Wow & Flutter Studios in East Nashville over four days. Engineered and mixed by analogue guru Joe V McMahan making use of every corner of the space. The drums sounded great in the kitchen and if you listen carefully you can hear the freight trains rolling past.
Recently Martin has headlined Music City Roots in Nashville, performed on the Cayamo Cruise with Chris Stapleton, toured coast to coast with ZZ Ward, Delta Rae and opened for Iron & Wine, Bruce Hornsby, Five for Fighting, World Party, Beth Hart, Joe Bonamassa amongst many others. His music has features on hit TV shows such as the Vampire Diaries, Banshee, America best Bars and VH1’s Morning Buzz. Last summer in Canada he and Daniel played Winnipeg, Vancouver, Canmore and Calgary Folk Music Festivals as well as shows in the Caribbean, the US and Europe.
Daniel has played the Ryman Auditorium, Grand Ole Opry, Tennessee Theatre, Bonnaroo, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, MerleFest, Hardly Strictly, Bluegrass, StordFest, The Kate Wolf Folk Festival, The Edmonton Folk Festival, New Orleans Jazz Fest, The Blue Note Tokyo, Chateau St. Michelle, Jammin at Hippie Jacks (Jack’s) and many more.
Tickets £15 available directly from the cafe, online at http://www.wegottickets.com/event/454474 (10% admin fee applies) or on the door on the night.

We visited Bangor for the first time , we had travelled from 4am and we were looking for somewhere to have breakfast. We spotted this little cafe and thought we'd give it ago.

The prices were little higher than we like to pay but once we had tasted the food it was def worth paying for !! The saying you get what you pay for springs to mind, all of us thought it was lovely and if we are ever in the area again we'd defiantly eat here again.

User

We came here for our breakfast and we really enjoyed it 😊 we were back the same day for our lunch!! 😉 Food is really great! It's a lovely place with fantastic, very friendly staff 😊😊😊

User

This place has the vibe, your genuinely made to feel welcome, plus points being the food, the best in town, as is the coffee, excellent value for money.

User

The homemade soup and garlic bread was beautiful, great atmosphere apart from some young lad trying to play the guitar right next to us couldn't hear ourselves talk, wouldn't mind but he was crap.

User

Really enjoyed lunch at blue sky. Great service, friendly staff and food was amazing. Really recommend the sloppy josephine and the thai tofu burger

User

Our first day in rainy north Wales. Blue sky cafe Bognor was a great treat. The food was worth every penny. The staff were friendly and understanding to being gluten free. The atmosphere was relaxing. Thanks

User

Oh my word what an amazing place to stumble across on.

Children catered for perfectly..

I had the calz toasties and husband had the wpesh rarebit with egg and bacon children sausage and chips and the chicken pitta. Well the plates were cleared. Every mouth full had a sense of quiet contemplation and a Mmmmm Mmmmm after it. Totally recommend and would come back x

User

Lovely menu of fresh food, lots to choose from. Loose tea served in lovely teapots. We queued to get in but totally worth the wait.

User

User

Just when you think you can't find a good place to eat when away on holiday.... and boom you find blue sky cafe.... well and truly recommend it... fantastic food with real flavour...

User

I've been wanting to go here for a while as my daughter in law who lives on Anglesey tells me how great it is.

I had the breakfast sundae, it was absolutely gorgeous.

All the others on my table enjoyed theirs too.

We had Cowboy breakfast, waffles and smashed avocado they were all amazeballs!

Coffee was lush too

Thanks so much

User

I honestly couldn't fault this café, from the very first visit every meal, drink and experience has been perfect. The staff are gorgeous and attentive, the atmosphere is peaceful and the prices are beyond reasonable for the quality and quantity of the meals! Every item on the menu is fresh, creative and delicious. It's certainly one of my favourite places to visit in Bangor, well, in general. I also cannot thank the owner enough for helping me to arrange a birthday surprise for my partner, who also adores the cafe, by arranging to create a beautiful chocolate cake especially for him and being so helpful and lovely throughout our discussions. I know for certain we will definitely return whenever we're given the chance. Flawless.

User

I had the vegetarian breakfast. It was delicious and really filling. As always,a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff. Can't recommend it highly enough.

User

Had lunch here today. Have tried to come before but it's always too full so not able to get a seat, which is disappointing at the time but is a good sign that it's a good place. A relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. My husband and I had sandwiches, 1 blt and 1 ham jam & pickles. Was a really nice sandwich with plenty of the filling, very tasty indeed, and a pot of delicious coleslaw on the side. Will definitely be returning. We'll have to come early to make sure we get a seat.

User

Had an AMAZING night at Blue Sky tonight. Not had such a fun Sunday in a long time. Would be amazeballs when you play a lively gig to give a bit more dancing room but I appreciate that must be difficult!! But fab nonetheless!!!!

User

A hidden gem! The lentils and bhajis are to die for. Can’t wait to return

User

A gem of a place! Imaginative menu with everything looking and tasting at least as good as it sounds. If you like dull, boring, "safe" food, it may not be for you! Wonderful soup combinations (yesterday's involved sweet potato and pineapple!). Amazing range of burgers. If you enjoy cooking yourself, you will go home full of ideas to try! Excellent for vegetarians ( they do amazing things with tofu!). Great atmosphere. Always busy, for a good reason - it's a pleasure to eat here.

User

A lovely Cafe, with excellent wholesome fresh food. A long wait though. I expect it is much better when the university students are on holiday.

Would definitely recommend to anyone with food intolerance issues.
