Book At Bedtime

About Book At Bedtime

Book at Bedtime is a children's charity set up in North Wales to provide a bookcase full of children's books to local women's refuges all over the UK.

Book At Bedtime Description

Book at Bedtime is a children's charity set up in North Wales in 2010 to provide a bookcase full of children's books to women's refuges all over the UK.

Often the children arrive in the refuge with nothing but the clothes they are wearing. Book at Bedtime will not only provide books for the children and their mums whilst they are in the refuge but when they leave they can take a favourite book from the bookcase with them. This will give them something that belongs just to them.

Book at Bedtime promotes the importance of children being encouraged to read by and with their mums. Children who enjoy books read more and this means that they will do better in school, they will have more confidence and ultimately they can expand the possibilities for their future.

Book at Bedtime also supplies a set of Family Change books to each refuge to enable the playworkers to work one-to-one with the children to help them deal with their emotions and the difficult situation they are in.

There are over 400 refuges in the UK so if you would like to get involved with collecting books and /or raising money in your area we can help! Just get in touch.

Do you love books? Can you imagine a life without reading? Your children's lives without books? If you feel the same way as us please help. You can do this by:

- volunteering to collect books to fill a bookcase
- donating /raising the money to buy a bookcase
- fundraising the money needed to buy the Family Change Set
- volunteering your time to become a Book at Bedtime Friend of your local Women's refuge to provide an annual top-up of books
- donating money through your PayPal account. Log on, click Send Money, type in my email address of peta@petapendlebury. co. uk, put in the amount you want and under the personal tab you will be able to click on gift, then send. It's as easy as that!

Do you know of a school (primary & secondary) that would like to get involved in asking the children to donate a book?

Do you have any contacts with anyone who sells books (Waterstones, supermarkets, private book shops)?

Please - help us fill more bookcases and enable a child to disappear inside the wonderful world of a book - even if only for a little while.

We had a lovely cheque arrive this week from St George's Primary School in Wallasey for Β£143. Thank you so much for this. That buys us either 4 bookcases or 3 courier fees or half a Family Change set! What shall we buy?! Happy reading ☺️ πŸ“š

One of the lovely books from Amy. I know one of our trustees will like this as she's vegan now 😊πŸ₯¦

The wonderful Amy Vickers has done it again! A fantastic collection and delivered by her lovely OH. I know I won't have to worry about quality here - Amy is as picky as we are! Hope you're feeling much better soon Amy πŸ˜ŠπŸ“š

Well the lovely men from @UPS have just collected our biggest collection to date - 16 boxes!! 4 full sized and 2 half sized bookcases heading off to 6 refuges in Derbyshire. So as of tomorrow we jump from 111 to 117 refuges supported which means approximately 7000 children supported. β€οΈπŸ“š

So we are ramping up for the biggest collection for our courier to date. This pile is already boxed for 3 refuges in Derbyshire (1 full bookcase and 2 half sized bookcases for their smaller refuges). And now we start the boxing up for 3 more full sized bookcases for another 3 refuges also in Derbyshire! If anyone has good sized boxes they can donate please let us know. The ones that wine clubs use for delivery are a great size (fits 12 bottles) but any box of a similar size would be great πŸ“šπŸ˜€

Thanks to Jan who left these at Bodywork-Pilates Ltd last night. Virtually all in great condition which is fabulous. We have found a current library book though. The fine might be a bit steep as it was due back in November last year! 😱

Came back to a shed full of books yesterday from the fabulous Margaret who is a regular collector of books for us. In her email she said: "Two of the books are from my granddaughter. I told her many months ago about Book At Bedtime. On Christmas Eve she left a parcel for Santa, wrapped and with the instruction for Santa to give the enclosed books to children who don’t have any books. Santa has, of course, sent her a thank you letter" Awww!

Loving this. Someone else who finds an escape in the world of a book and feels safe in a library β€οΈπŸ“š

Saturday Bodywork-Pilates, Chester & Wrexham with Wilma and Wilbur. The puds are just out of shot - although by the time we took this photo I think they were pretty much all gone! πŸ˜‹πŸ“š

And it was a really fun day too! A huge thank you to Helen and Russ. And if you wonder what I am sitting on..... these are the new reformers. An excellent addition to the studio - my husband is absolutely hooked and has noticed considerable improvement in his hips and knees since taking classes. I'll get him back walking with me again soon at this rate!

And some more lovely feedback from one of the refuges: "A few months ago, we had an Italian family come into our Refuge, the children’s English was very limited so we used books for them to look at the pictures and start to learn some English words. Over time the children began to use English as their first language, this enabled us to support them so much better. The children had witnessed years of domestic abuse and were finally able to speak to someone about it."

Well I've finally got through the 4 donations we've had over the last week and this is the lovely pile that are good enough. In fact only 2 books weren't good enough and 8 require a little tlc to remove a name so a huge thank you to the families who dropped these off for reading our guidelines and being so picky on our behalf. And the really good news? Sit down everyone....the biggest delivery was from a teenage BOY! We are always short of these books so if you have any......? πŸ˜ŠπŸ“š

Our first Wilma & Wilbur heading off to pastures new! These are part of a huge collection that went out last week. 2 bookcases to 2 new refuges plus one top up box of books to Rock Ferry and 2 top up boxes plus an extra Family Change set to the Boston refuges (Lincolnshire - not USA!) 😁
