A CELEBRATION OF ONE OF THE NATION’S FAVOURITE TREES AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR
“ASH” LOOKS AT EVERY ASPECT OF THE TREE: ... ITS MANY VISUAL MANIFESTATIONS AS A TREE OF WOODLAND, PASTURE, HEDGEROW, RIVERSIDE, MOUNTAIN, PARKLAND AND STREET; RAISING ASH WOODS AND THE USES OF THE TIMBER FOR SO MANY DIFFERENT PURPOSES; ITS CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE IN PLACE NAMES, FOLKLORE, MYTH AND SUPERSTITION; ITS INSPIRATIONAL IMPORTANCE FOR ARTISTS, POETS AND WRITERS; HISTORICAL LANDMARKS – FAMOUS TREES PAST AND PRESENT AND ALL THEIR FASCINATING STORIES; AND, OF COURSE, THE ISSUES ARISING FROM THE INEVITABLE SPREAD OF ASH DIEBACK.
Jointly sponsored by Woodland Trust and The Ash Project (a special project instigated by Kent Downs AONB) Archie has worked on “ASH” for the last 18 months and is now proud to announce its publication on 19th September 2018. With a foreword by acknowledged tree-lover Dame Judi Dench, “ASH” is a large hardback edition (300 x 250mm) with 216 profusely illustrated pages printed on a sumptuous 170gsm FSC accredited paper, and bound in scuff-resistant matt laminate boards with a spot-UV title. “ASH” has no ungainly dust-jacket (to get damaged on your shelf). RRP is £30.00.
Not only is Archie the creator of this work, but he is also publisher, distributor and publicist. There are no third parties involved and copies are only available from bookshops or himself. Archie would like to emphasise that his book will NOT be found on Amazon or any other high discount Internet stores. He is a fervent supporter of the independent bookshop network and is keen to make sure that a level playing field exists for all members of the book trade. 500 copies will be signed and numbered – released on a first come first served basis. Pre-orders are now being taken by email with books being released after the 20th. This is a limited edition of only 4,000 copies

A little heads up for you about a fantastic new title due next month from local author Gillian Monks about how we can rediscover the magic and spirit of the festive season. This is due to be published at the beginning of October and we are taking pre-orders now <3 • How to reconnect with the season and live winter well by rediscovering ancient festivals, easy recipes, traditional decorations and simple home made gifts. • For fans of The Almanac and other lifestyle titles suc...h as The Little Book of Hygge, Merry Midwinter chimes with the current thirst for books about finding peace of mind in a frenetic modern world by rediscovering the old ways. • This year celebrate Christmas authentically, avoiding the consumerism that blights much of our 21st Century seasonal celebrations.
Celebrating midwinter is not about what you buy or how much you spend – it’s about your attitude to life. Turn away from the frenetic commercialization of Christmas and rediscover the meaningful realities of this, the oldest and most precious celebration of the year. The true significance of midwinter is not found in any individual spiritual or religious belief or practice. Instead, the winter solstice provides an opportunity to celebrate what we as humans share; to set aside our differences and come together with a sense of community and cheer. Merry Midwinter is a cornucopia of ideas for how to make your own decorations (kissing boughs, advent wreaths, crackers, stockings and more); your own alternative gifts which cost nothing except time and thought; your own entertainments and games and simple, seasonal recipes from years gone by. About the author: A Quaker, Theosophist, and practicing Druid, Gillian Monks facilitates workshops in self-development and spirituality. She was born and brought up in Lancashire, before training as a teacher and graduating from Lancaster University. Gillian lives in the heart of Snowdonia with her husband and son, and five cats and two dogs.

New from Jan Morris - In My Mind's Eye - A Thought Diary AS HEARD ON BBC RADIO 4s BOOK OF THE WEEK 'Morris is one of Britain's greatest living writers.' The Times 'I have never before in my life kept a diary of my thoughts, and here at the start of my ninth decade, having for the moment nothing much else to write, I am having a go at it. Good luck to me.' So begins this extraordinary book, a collection of diary pieces that Jan Morris wrote for the Financial Times over the co...urse of 2017. A former soldier and journalist, and one of the great chroniclers of the world for over half a century, she writes here in her characteristically intimate voice - funny, perceptive, wise, touching, wicked, scabrous, and above all, kind - about her thoughts on the world, and her own place in it as she turns ninety. From cats to cars, travel to home, music to writing, it's a cornucopia of delights from a unique literary figure. Author Biography: Jan Morris was born in 1926 of a Welsh father and an English mother, and when she is not travelling she lives with her partner Elizabeth Morris in the top left-hand corner of Wales, between the mountains and the sea. Her books include Coronation Everest, Venice, The Pax Britannica Trilogy (Heaven's Command, Pax Britannica, and Farewell the Trumpets), and Conundrum. She is also the author of six books about cities and countries, two autobiographical books, several volumes of collected travel essays and, more recently, the unclassifiable Trieste and the Meaning of Nowhere. A Writer's World, a collection of her travel writing and reportage from over five decades, was published in 2003. In Stock, published by Faber in hardback at £16.99 We are hoping that we will be able to offer you signed copies in the next few days

It's taken all evening, but the Harry Potter competition entries have now been sorted, entered into the sorting hat and a winner has been chosen. Actually, no that's not quite right, we were having such trouble this year that we have picked three postcards out of the hat this time!! The winner and two runners up will be announced TOMORROW!!!!! (Might help cheer up a few little ones that have started back at school? 😁) Check back tomorrow to find out who the lucky winners are!! Thank you all for your entries, we've had a fun evening reading through the tie-brakers, I might even have to share some that made us laugh. Laughter - the best medicine! Have a lovely evening x

October sees the re-issue of A S Byatt's The Children's Book and Possession. I particularly enjoyed Ragnarok, first published in 1991 - As the bombs rain down in the Second World War, one young girl is evacuated to the English countryside. Struggling to make sense of her new wartime life, she is given a copy of a book of ancient Norse myths and her inner and outer worlds are transformed. Linguistically stunning and imaginatively abundant, this mesmerising tale - inspired by the myth of Ragnarok - is a landmark piece of storytelling from one of the world's truly great writers.

There's nothing like getting lost in a good book.....As long as you can find your way out. I am VERY excited about this forthcoming title 'Pages & Co - Tilly and the Bookwanderers'. This is a captivating, curl-up-on-the-sofa debut about the magic of books and the power of the imagination. Since her mother's disappearance, eleven-year-old Tilly has found comfort in stories at Pages & Co., her grandparents' bookshop. But when her favourite characters, Anne of Green Gables and A...lice from Wonderland, appear in the shop, Tilly's adventures become very real. Not only can she follow Anne and Alice into their thrilling worlds, she discovers she can bookwander into any story she chooses. Tilly's new ability could even help her solve the mystery of what happened to her mother all those years ago. But danger may be lurking on the very next page...
Review: 'Delightful! A joy of a book' Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink & Stars `A thrilling, inventive book-lover's delight, where fiction really does come to life. It's a treat for readers of every age' Matt Haig, author of A Boy Called Christmas `Pages and Co. is a celebration of all the best things in life: books, friendship, adventures and cake. And pirates. And hot chocolate. It's utterly beautiful and perfectly brilliant' Greg James and Chris Smith, authors of Kid Normal `An enchanting tale for book-lovers of all ages, Tilly and the Bookwanderers is a magical debut that is NOT to be missed' Catherine Doyle, author of The Storm Keeper's Island `Pages & Co. is a true delight for book-lovers - you'll adore exploring the magical world of the bookwanderers with Tilly' Katherine Woodfine, author of The Clockwork Sparrow
Author Biography: Anna James is a writer and journalist living in London. Anna was Book News Editor at The Bookseller magazine and was Literary Editor of Elle UK. Anna has also written for The Pool, The LA Times, The Financial Times and The Independent, as well as making bookish YouTube videos as A Case For Books. She hosts literary events and panels and is the co-founder and host of the YA Salon in London. She was shortlisted for the Kim Scott Walwyn Award for Women in Publishing in 2015, and the London Book Fair Trailblazers Award in 2016.
Published in Hardback on the 18th September at £12.99, we will be offering copies at an introductory price of £10. I'm hoping that the publishers Harper Collins will be able to supply me with some fabulous marketing material to enable us to create a mesmerising window display for this title, watch this space! Our very own 12year old book wanderer Megan will be first in line to read this one, so I will be asking her to write us a little review :)
