Brymbo Heritage Project

About Brymbo Heritage Project

Celebrating Brymbo's rich natural, industrial and social heritage, leading a vision for the Fossil Forest and the restoration and re-use of the old iron and steelworks, and making the most of the place in the meantime.

Brymbo Heritage Project Description

Brymbo Heritage Group have secured £97, 500 from the UK's Heritage Lottery Fund to run a range of activities over the period 2014-2017. The main aim is to build momentum ahead of a large scale regeneration project to restore and re-use the former iron and steelworks buildings as well as realise the international potential of Brymbo Fossil Forest.

A key component is capturing and publishing people's stories of Brymbo, particularly (but not exclusively) relating to its former steelworks. The project aims to record these stories as sound recordings and video clips, and to link these to a comprehensive directory of photographs and illustrations of the works. The project also aims to share these by way of a searchable website, by organising and promoting a programme of public visits, tours and open days, and by developing an education programme for schools, colleges and adult learners.

The Lottery funding is paying for a part-time Heritage Officer to coordinate the project and for a range of activities and materials to be delivered and developed.

The project is highly reliant on volunteers to contribute stories, to catalogue and publish recordings and pictures, to continue the many ongoing site maintenance and restoration tasks, and to serve as guides for public and schools visits.

The project is a key step on the journey to securing a series of major capital investments over the next ten years to turn the site into a nationally significant visitor centre.

Brymbo Heritage Area includes the remaining ironworks, steelworks, coal mining and associated buidings, as well as the fossilised forest and ecology areas.

Event postponed - We are sorry to announce that we need to postpone our upcoming Open Day. Please read in full.
Negotiations regarding our long term role in caring for and developing the heritage area (including the fossil forest and all of the industrial buildings) are ongoing and are now progressing very well, but we haven't yet been able to confirm our short-term access to the site for public events.
We are hopeful this position will change over the coming weeks and that... we can bring you a full open day in a month or so.
Unfortunately we can’t allow public access on site; but if you were planning a visit to drop off some apples for the Annual Pressing with Brymbo Heritage Orchard Project, you can still drop them off at the front entrance gate. There will be Volunteers there to greet you.
Thank you for the continued support, BHT Staff & Volunteers.

#volunteers continuing to prepare the site have uncovered a sloping feature in the sandstone that appears topological in nature, we're having trouble figuring it out, any suggestions? So far people from Twitter and Instagram have chimed in and have suggested the bank of a slow moving river! Also taking suggestions for a name of this prehistoric river ('river mcriver face' is not eligable) #coalswamp #geology #sedimentology #palaeontology #carboniferous

EVENT POSTPONED - Saturday 7th September - Outdoor Cinema at Miller Road Field.
Brymbo Heritage Trust regrets that we have to announce the postponement of the Outdoor Cinema event that was due to take place tomorrow.
This action is due to some changes being made to the use of the site by the landowner, which mean that we do not currently have access to all of the usual spaces.
... The Trust is in the process of acquiring large parts of the former Steelworks site to establish a visitor attraction, learning centre, events venue and community park, all set to open in 2023. This process is part of a detailed and ambitious plan, and we are working closely with all involved while the acquisition is finalised.
Please be assured that everyone involved in these discussions is aware of the support and commitment of the fantastic volunteers, residents, sponsors and contributors who are working tirelessly to see our vision for the spaces that industry left behind a reality.
The field below Miller Road is one of these spaces, and it's already generated huge interest and effort (especially through Plas Brymbo Residents' Association) to develop and run a programme of activities for local residents young and old.
Finally...we look forward to reaching a point where our social media posts return to being filled with our customary positivity 😀

Brymbo Heritage Trust regrets that we have to announce the postponement of the 'Works' live entertainment event that was due to take place this coming Friday evening.
This action is due to some changes being made to the use of the site by the landowner, which mean that we do not currently have access to all of the usual spaces.

We look forward to being able to reschedule the event as soon as we can, and want to thank Break The Record for their patience in being rescheduled for a second time. Third time lucky perhaps?

EVENT - location change – Plas Brymbo Family Fun Day – Saturday 24th August
As you know Brymbo Heritage Trust is aiming to acquire large parts of the former Brymbo Steelworks site to establish a visitor attraction, learning centre, events venue and community park. The process of acquisition is yet to be finalised, and in the meantime the private landowner is in the process of reviewing our current use of the site.
Unfortunately, this means that we aren't in a position to be a...ble to use the area below Miller Road for the Family Fun Day that we had helped Plas Brymbo Residents’ Association prepare to hold there.
However, we are able to hold the event at the main heritage site instead, and we very much look forward to welcoming you there.
Our open day will follow 24 hours later, so if you're up for it, why not join us two days running!
