Buac - Bangor University Archery Club Description

Welcome to the Bangor University Archery Club! (BUAC)

Captain: Abbey John-Davies
Secretary: Amber Short
Treasurer: Beth Brown
Events Coordinator: Arron Williams
Equipment Officer: Robert Williams
Social Secretary: Fiona Ng
Coach: Phoebe Hills

Our club is open to new members all year round from total beginners to experienced archers. You don’t need to sign up at serendipity or have come to a taster session to start, you can come to any session at normal site and we will teach you the basics of archery and our range safety.
Archery is a popular worldwide sport and is shared by nearly every culture! It has been greatly popularised by modern fictional heroes such as Legolas, Hawkeye and Katniss Everdeen as well as folk heroes such as Robin Hood inspiring people to try it.
At the club, we practice the four main styles of bow used in competitions, known as disciplines – Olympic Recurve, Bare Bow (Recurve bows without the aid of sights), Longbow and Compound. Each discipline is very different and we do our best to accommodate as many as we can so that you have the freedom to explore which discipline you enjoy the most.
Our range in normal site sports hall allows us to set our target bosses at a variety of distances from 10 yards (9m) to 30 yards (27m). This means that there is always a target set at a comfortable distance for your skill level. The target bosses can also have target sheets of varying sizes attached from 120cm in diameter to 45cm in diameter. The purpose of this is to gradually increase the shooting difficulty as our archers increase in skill, continually challenging them to grow and improve.
What else do we do? We enter many tournaments throughout the year, the most common of these is BUCS. We get the chance at BUCS to play against 184 different universities and colleges in all of the 4 disciplines of archery that we practice, so it’s a pretty big deal. We also have the annual Varsity competition, held between Bangor University and Aberystwyth University. This is a very popular and vibrant event between the two neighbouring Universities, so it’s a great way to test our universities talent against another in a friendly set of games.
That’s all the serious stuff done! Every now and then we decide to cut loose and focus on stress relief with 'Fun Shoots'. These are themed shoots that involve games, popping balloons, shooting pumpkins and whatever else we manage to come up with. These are particularly popular around holidays such as Halloween, Easter and Christmas.
Finally, for our more social side. We have our regular club socials at the Harp Inn. The Harp is a lovely pub with decent prices for food, drink and a pool table on the top floor that we usually gather around. It’s also very popular with our members, largely due to its calm and sociable atmosphere that lets members relax and chill together. There are also themed socials that are organised by our social secretary such as beach trips, fun centre visits and pub crawls to look forward too.
If you have any questions to ask then please do message the Facebook page or talk with one of our committee members wearing purple shirts.
We hope you have found this helpful and that you come and visit us soon. : D
