Can you help placing Exploration students for summer 2018?
A message from Dr James Lambert-Smith our recently appointed lecturer in Exploration Geology
Hello Everyone, I’ve recently taken over responsibility for the student placement program for the Exploration and Resource Geology BSc.... I am currently gearing this up for next summer (2018), and so I am on the hunt for companies willing to host our students. Placements are typically 5 or more weeks over the summer and can start as soon as exams are over in mid-June. Our degree scheme also allows a ‘sandwich year’ in industry and we do have several students who are interested in this option. These are typically more difficult to come by, so if anyone is interested in this please get in touch. The placement should involve carrying some spatial work, upon which the student can base a dissertation. This can be surface, open pit or underground mapping, core logging, etc. The students should be able to further develop their project on their return to Cardiff. This typically involved thin section petrography or data analysis, but can also involve some of our excellent analytical equipment, including XRD, ICP-MS and a new state-of the art analytical SEM which is particularly useful for characterising ores at the micro-scale. There are obvious benefits to placements for companies; you gain an extra pair of field hands, the student can produce a strong dissertation based on a topic relevant to the company, and, if they are a good fit, you may be able to ‘earmark’ them for a job once they have finished their degree. I think the benefits to the students speak for themselves, I myself went on placement during my studies, and I’m sure some of you will have too and will appreciate how valuable an experience it is! So, if you think you or your company can help, with either the summer or sandwich year placements, please get in touch with me (Lambert-SmithJ@Cardiff.ac.uk). Cheers James

Hazel Prichard's funeral arrangements
Dear Colleagues,
Hazel’s husband, David has confirmed the following arrangements for the funeral:
... Thursday 26th January 1.30pm.
A service of remembrance will be held at St Margaret’s Church, Waterloo Road, Roath.
All are welcome to join for refreshments at the Park Inn, Circle Way East, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff after the service.
Friday 27th January 9.30am
Hazel loved nature and the outdoors, and her final wish was to be buried on her land overlooking St Brides Bay, in Pembrokeshire.
The cortege will leave John Summers and Sons, Roath Court, Newport Road at 9.30am and make its way to Pembrokeshire. A short service will be held at the burial site.
You are also welcome to take part in Hazel’s final field trip. Warm waterproof clothing and stout footwear are recommended.
To assist in organising the catering David has asked that we collate the number of people intending to come along to the Park Inn after the service.
Potential numbers of those intending to travel to Pembrokeshire for the burial would be appreciated as depending on the weather, suitable parking may be limited.
Please fill in the doodle poll accordingly:
