Cardiff University School Of Journalism, Media And Culture Description

The Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies is a world-leading centre for media teaching and research.

The School has been a pioneer in journalism education since 1970. It is a world renowned centre for the study of all aspects of journalism and was recently listed as one of the top ten Journalism schools for Asian students in the world.

The School combines a long-standing record of excellence in teaching and journalism training with an outstanding research portfolio – with over 40 awards from a wide range of Research Councils, Foundations, Charities and the media industry since 2001.

We offer a wide range courses at various levels. Our undergraduate course in journalism, media and cultural studies is an academic, research-based degree, which can also be combined with joint degrees in English or Sociology.

Our postgraduate offerings range from industry oriented, broadcast, magazine and newspaper practice-based training to more academic degrees, from Master to PhD.

Our BA consistently receives excellent ratings in the National Student Surveys, while our postgraduate courses regularly win accolades.
Journalism, Film and Media graduates celebrate outside the Bute Building.

Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies graduates celebrate outside the Bute Building.

The School's reputation for international research was recognised in the UK government's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (an evaluation of research in UK universities that takes place every 7 years).

They judged 45% of the School's research to be ‘world-leading’ and a further 30% ‘internationally excellent’, making us one of the UK's top departments in any field.

No other institution in our field in the UK has achieved this level of excellence in academic teaching, postgraduate training and research. But we do not believe in excellence for its own sake: our teaching and research is grounded in a commitment to ethics, social responsibility and the importance of journalism, media and communications to a healthy democracy.

The world of media and communications is constantly changing, and we are aware of the need to be responsive to new ideas and new developments. The future may be uncertain, but we want to play our part in shaping it for the better.

Dr Mervi Pantti will be here from 4PM today for the final Research Seminar of this semester to discuss public discourses around racism in societies dominantly imagined as ‘white’ - join us!

We’re very excited to welcome Dr Mervi Pantti to JOMEC tomorrow for the final Research Seminar of this semester. Dr Pantti is Associate Professor in Media and Communication Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki.
Abstract: What are the public discourses around racism in societies dominantly imagined as ‘white’, with markedly different histories of racialized oppression than countries like the US or UK? This paper examines how the concept of racism ...is used in Finnish public debate by employing unsupervised topic modelling to derive topics related to racism from a large corpus of news media content and online discussion forum comments. The paper shows that what racism is understood to be is an intensely political process, but also one shaped by the type of media platform, specificities of Finnish-language and national ideological battles.

‘Miracle’ coma recovery? You may have heard Prof Jenny Kitzinger talking to media outlets last week about Munira Abdulla’s ‘awakening’.
In this post Jenny looks back at how she and the media tried to comment on the story with limited time to research the case and highlights the importance of journalists talking to relevant experts and avoiding recycling cultural myths about “sleeping beauty” coma patients.

In February 2019 our student volunteers helped us take some amazing pictures of Two Central Square for our all-new undergraduate School brochure.
The whole team worked really hard and the results speak for themselves – Thanks everyone!
