Burry Port Ladies RFC travelled to Bonymaen on Sunday (Mar 5) for a much anticipated battle between two in form sides in the first round of The Bowl. Llanelli Online was invited along on the team bus but we were unable to make it. Thankfully our roving sports reporter Chris Edmunds was available. He writes: Before the game began the two lady’s teams lined up together for a minute’s silence in memory of Ellie Norkett who sadly lost her life in a car accident. [ 329 more words ]

THE West Wales the Raiders welcomed Swansea University to Stebonheath for a friendly match on a blustery Sunday (Mar 5) afternoon. The game began with Swansea University gaining a lot of possession of the ball. It took The Raiders a while to get a foothold on the game. When The Raiders finally had their first full set it finished with hooker Dafydd Phillips going over with a short dive from a play. [ 433 more words ]

SIXTY years ago a young man who could be described as the Bob Dylan of architecture popped onto the black and white TV screens in our homes to warn of the perils of what planners were about to do to Britain. They were we were told in cahoots with local authorities and unscrupulous developers and about to scam the country by building poor quality social housing on an industrial scale. [ 676 more words ]

Report by Robert Lloyd It is so often the case that inspirational stories lend themselves to equally inspirational tributes. It was certainly the case at Burry Port Memorial Hall when Burry Port Town Band staged the Welsh premiere of ‘Stillness’ a special composition celebrating the achievement of Amelia Earhart, the first woman to cross the Atlantic in a plane. Burry Port’s part in the Earhart story is well documented. [ 617 more words ]

A private maths tutor in Carmarthenshire claims that children in Wales are being set up to fail in maths GCSE examinations and has expressed his concerns regarding the possible impact on the health and well being of children as a result. He has also claimed that the WJEC is in receipt of hundreds of thousands of pounds of money for pointless examinations, which he believes is wasted when it could be put into providing additional support for the most deprived pupils in Wales. Growing up on a council estate in Llanelli there were not that many chances. There were success stories. That usually involved winning the pools or sport. We lived across the road from Byron Stevenson who had been selected to play for Leeds Utd. At that time leeds was full of the greats like Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, Alan Clarke and another local guy Glan Letheren was also taken into their ranks. [ 660 more words ]

A brace of goals apiece by James Loveridge and Jordan Follows ensured the visitors returned from Ystrad Mynach and the artificial surface with maximum points to maintain their six point lead from Briton Ferry Llansawel at the head of the table. In truth, the final tally could well have been doubled, with Gavin Hegarty performing heroics in the Buds goal, while their opponents were guilty if failing to convert a glut of chances. THEY say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach or something like that. If this were true then I am in love. Tucked away on a side street just off the Ty Elwyn building is one of the quaintest and surprising eateries in Carmarthenshire. I would have said Llanelli but this needs to be made known county wide to gastronauts, foodies, the bohemians and the dedicated few in pursuit of beauty, charm and excellence. [ 558 more words ]
