Five things your pet is trying to tell you; 1. Head patting; When you go to stroke a dog, the worst thing you can do is go straight for their head. Put simply, if someone suddenly reached out and tried to touch your face and pat you on the head you probably wouldn't like it. You might feel quite intimidated. Well, so does your dog. When you stroke a dog, it's best to get down to their level, offer out your hand, and let them come to you. Then stroke their side, back or chest...

Meet Nelly, one of our newest members to The Pet Health Club! 🐶

Ava came to see us yesterday for her post operative check after being spayed earlier this week. Her lovely owner kindly shared these photos with us of Ava keeping cool in the very hot weather we’ve been having! ☀️ Isn’t she lovely! 🐶
Here are a wide selection of cooling options and tips to use for your pets this summer;
🐾 Cooling mats & vests ... 🐾 Damp towels to rest on 🐾 Regular grooming to ensure a less dense coat 🐾 Paddling pools to splash in 🐾 Fresh drinking water should be available at all times 🐾 Keep your pet indoors/ in shaded areas 🐾 Walking during cooler parts of the day; either early morning or late evening 🐾 Using a fan to keep cool
BIG NO NO’S‼️ 🚗NEVER leave your dog in a warm car 🔥AVOID hot pavements which could burn your pets pads 🚶🏼NO walks in the middle of the day
Please bear in mind if using ice or paddling pools as a way to keep your pet cool, we recommend you keep your pet supervised at all times❗️

BBQ tip number four This one applies to all hot weather too.
Our pets can quickly overheat in the sun. Make sure they have access to plenty of water and can head into the shade or indoors whenever they need to.
... If you hear there is a heatwave coming, book your dog in for their regular grooming session.
Keeping them neat tidy and clipped will help to keep him comfortable too.

BBQ tips number three
If you’re using lighter fluid or firelighters to light your BBQ, make sure you store them well out of reach of pets. It can be really dangerous for curious paws.
Always keep your pets away from any fires.
... Think about other potential poisons too – keep alcoholic drinks out of temptation’s way for thirsty pets.

Is your pet vaccinated? Canine and Feline diseases can seriously affect the health of your pet and in some cases be fatal. Celyn Vet Group Holywell & Prestatyn are offering a vaccination amnesty until the end of August. If you are unsure why not call the surgery.

BBQ tip number two
If you don’t keep a close eye on them, pets can easily get hold of something they shouldn’t.
A big problem at BBQs is pets eating things like kebab skewers or the core from a corn on the cob. These can cause serious internal blockages and injuries.
... Make sure any leftovers and rubbish are thrown away in a lidded bin that your pet can’t raid. All those food smells will be super tempting for cats and dogs so your bin needs to be super secure.

Its BBQ season again, hooray you may be saying...
However they can pose some risks, not least to our pets if we are not careful.
So we have put together some tips to ensure you can enjoy a BBQ without a trip to the vets at the end of it..
... Our first tip is to 'Scrap the scraps'
Is your dog a master of puppy dog eyes? Don't give in!
BBQ scraps can upset your pet's stomach and under cooked or fatty foods can make them very poorly. Try giving them a healthy chew to chomp on or a fun toy to play with instead. It will keep them occupied while you enjoy your food inn peace.
Don't forget that bones can be really harmful for your dog, especially when cooked.
We'd never recommend giving them bones from the BBQ. It's best to give them a dog-safe toy to chew on instead!
