About City Of Newport Symphony Orchestra
City of Newport Symphony Orchestra is an historic symphony orchestra in South Wales led by a professional conductor.
We are affiliated with Ty Cerdd (Welsh Amateur Music Federation) and with Making Music.
City Of Newport Symphony Orchestra Description
History
The Orchestra began life as part of the Pleasant Sunday Afternoon (PSA) movement. Meetings began with an uplifting talk and a prayer. The orchestra gave a concert with a guest singer on the first Sunday of the month.
Originally there were two PSAs in Newport, but by the late 1940s there was only one, and now over 100 years later the orchestra is still going strong! The name changed to Newport Concert Orchestra around 1960 and has now changed to Newport Orchestra.
Current Organisation
The Orchestra is a non-profit organisation and is run by a committee of various orchestra members and yearly AGM's are held. Essentials such as Child Protection Policies are in place to ensure any younger members have appropriate safeguards in place. At present we welcome members from age 16 upwards.
Music
The orchestra has a large library of its own accumulated over the years; this consists of waltzes, marches and selections from musical shows, to overtures, suites and symphonies. At times we may also hire music and we are always seeking new funding methods to increase the orchestra repertoire.
Our Conductor: We employ a professional conductor, Sean O'Neill, for the Orchestra.
Our leader: Our orchestra is lead by Gisele Bollo
Rehearsals:
We currently rehearse on Monday nights from 7: 15pm to 9: 45pm at St John the Baptist Church, 57 Risca Rd, Newport NP20 4HX
