About Claire Scawn

About

Pottery /Ceramics classes and workshops primarily held within my studio.
The classes are fun, relaxing and suitable for all abilities as I tailor the classes to individuals providing a learner centred approach. The classes are small up to 6 participants so that I can promote a sense of well being through making and creating a sense of mastery whilst playing with clay.

I also teach off site with community groups, schools and organisations.

Location

The studio is within a purpose built converted "pig sty" on a former dairy farm in Abergavenny.
Funding to convert the space into a pottery studio was awarded through European Funding by the popular "Court Cupboard Gallery"

The studio is situated at the foot of the Skirrid Mountain which is preserved by the National Trust and overlooks the Blorenge Mountain which is under the care of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The terms given to pottery and ceramics basically mean the same thing; although people often assume pottery is wheel thrown it is far more than that and all techniques are explored in my classes.

I spent some time on my degree making moulds in plaster and casting in Porcelain and now I prefer a more hands on approach in hand building.

I fire the work to bisque temperature at 1000'c
and then if required I fire again to earthenware glaze temperatures.

I usually fire my own work to stoneware temperatures so people can try using different clay to experience as much versatility as possible.

Please note: There are often waiting times for finished pieces as I need to make sure that the kiln is full before firings.
