About Conwy Food Bank

Conwy Food Bank is an independent voluntary organisation with a paid supervisor, which provides food parcels to people in crisis in the County of Conwy.

Conwy Food Bank Description

Conwy Food Bank is a non-funded voluntary organisation which endeavours to feed people living in the County of Conwy who are in crisis and unable to afford food. We are independent and not part of a national network of foodbanks and our storeroom is given to us rent free so our overheads are therefore very low. There can be many reasons for people finding themselves in difficulty such as sanction of benefits, relationship breakdowns, debt, accommodation issues, illness and family problems.

Donations are taken to our storeroom and made into parcels to suit single people, couples or families and contain enough nutritious food to last around 3-4 days. Referrals are made to us for food parcels by professional organisations who are aware of the predicament of the person or family. Food parcels are taken to delivery points to be collected by the recipients or to be delivered by their referrer / support worker. Most of the food in the storeroom is given by donations from the public but we also buy food when in short supply. We have a fridge-freezer and keep bread, margarine, and long-life milk to include with the parcels. We also provide toiletries, baby food, nappies, and wipes when requested.

Who can ask for a parcel?
The Food Bank is for a crisis situation, not maintenance, so it is to assist people through a temporary shortfall in money when they cannot afford food. It is not possible to request for a food parcel for yourself or family or friends. This is because we need to know that the person or family who are in crisis will be out of crisis soon or are receiving support from other sources- they cannot rely on only the food bank as we can only give a total of 3 parcels. The person needs to be referred for a parcel by a professional person who is aware of their situation. If there is a problem with benefits then this could be the benefit agency or if they have a social worker or support worker, then they are allowed to refer.

Other examples of people who may refer are:
Health Visitor, Housing Association, Job Centre
If none of these apply then we would suggest making an appointment with the Citizen Advice Bureau who will offer support and may refer for a parcel if needed.
