After restoring the grave of fallen Ammanford soldier ‘Private Rees Jones’ last year and with Remembrance day approaching, our attention once again turned to locating the graves and memorials of more of our fallen soldiers.
With this in mind we contacted Major Kenneth J Burton who kindly helped us in finding the memorial of the late 'Private David Rhys Douglas Jenkins', which is located at Christian Temple, Ammanford.
Sadly over time the memorial had cracked and the overall c...ondition of the grave was very poor. Fortunately, our memorial team were able to tidy the grave and provide the late Private and his family with a new memorial, in hopes that his memory and sacrifice will live on.
"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them."
Please find below a brief history of Private David Rhys Douglas Jenkins.
‘David Rhys was born in Pantyffynnon, the son of Thomas and Sarah Ann Jenkins.
He attended Parcyrhun School followed by Ammanford Central School.
After School he worked in Wernos Colliery before moving along with many of his friends to Birmingham for work. It was there he enlisted into the army at the outbreak of the war.
He served in the 1st London Scottish (Donside) Gordon Highlanders, as one of many Welshmen who were drafted into the Scottish Regiments.
He was killed near Mosul, in Northern Iraq, and was buried the same day with full military honours.
Douglas, who was just 21 years of age, is buried in Mosul War Cemetery, his headstone carries the inscription chosen by his parents:
‘In loving Memory of dear Douglas’ ‘Thy will be done’ ‘Father, Mother and Family’
He is remembered on the Scottish National War Memorial, in Edinburgh Castle, on the Memorial Gates in Ammanford, as well as in Christian Temple, Ammanford.’

With over 140 years experience in the construction trade and over 25 years in the monumental trade, Griffiths memorials offer sympathetic advice on choosing the right memorial, inscription and design.
We will guide you each step along the way in providing a fitting and lasting memorial to your loved ones. We will also advise on the restoration and renovation of existing memorials with all the work being carried out to the highest standard by BRAMM accredited staff.
The majori...ty of work is carried out in our own workshops and is therefore closely monitored from start to finish. All work is carried out with regard to local rules and regulations. We have a showroom on the premises with a selection of memorials on display and are able to arrange personal consultations either at our offices or at your home.
