Denbighshire Archives Description

We collect historical records relating to Denbighshire, and preserve them for future generations.

We hold a wide range of original records, including registers of baptisms, burials and marriages, newspapers, photographs, maps, court records, deeds, trade directories and more. Our records date from the twelfth to the twenty-first century.

The records in our collections can be very useful if you are researching your family history, or the history of your house or local area. You may also need to look up a record for legal or official purposes.

You can come to the office and use the archives for free, and we do not charge for general advice about our collections. We can carry out a 'quick search' (e. g. a single parish register entry) on your behalf free of charge.

Day 12 of #Archive30 #Letters
This is a letter from our Foxhall collection written by Sarah Roberts staying at Geirionydd House, West Parade, Rhyl to her father (John Roberts) of Foxhall, Henllan, in 1878. She expresses how much she likes Rhyl and that she's been on a donkey ride and also to the swimming baths.
Rhyl is still a popular destination with tourists, did you know that only last week the SC2 opened it's doors? Funded by Denbighshire County Council, with contribution...s from Rhyl Town Council and Welsh Government, the new leisure attraction expects to attract 350,000 visitors per year!

Today’s theme for #Archive30 is Drawings! The watercolours of Plas Newydd, are a part of the Ladies of Llangollen collection.
The watercolours were painted by Miss Parker of Sweeney Hall, near Oswestry (afterwards Lady Leighton) during the 1820s and 1830s. They are scenes of the beautiful gardens at Plas Newydd in Llangollen.

#Archive30 today is about our building.
Denbighshire Archives are based at the Old Gaol in Ruthin. There has been a Gaol (House of Correction) on the bottom of Clwyd Street in Ruthin since 1654.
In 1866 a new Pentonville style wing was added, it remained a prison until 1916. It’s well known that during the Second World War the gaol was used as a munitions factory.
... It is now a Grade II listed building which serves two County Council departments since its refurbishment aided by a lottery grant in 2002, Denbighshire Archives and the Ruthin Gaol - Carchar Rhuthun.

Today is International School Meal Day. One of the aims of the campaign is to raise awareness of the importance of the nutritional quality of school meals. Looking back at the 1919 Annual Report of the School Medical Officer for the county of Denbighshire, it was recorded that out of the 6,861 school children examined that year, 5% of these were reported with nutrition below normal.
Here are two photographs of the Annual report (CD/H/1/5) which include details of other aspects of the physical condition of school children at this time.
