Drifters Conversions Description
I trained as a furniture designer and cabinet maker at college, after spending a lot of my time in my fathers workshop learning his trade, cabinet making and antique restoration.
Over the years I've never shied away from learning new skills, all aspects of the building /construction & restoration trades , plumbing, electrics 12v and mains, solar and wind power setups, welding, mechanics, vehicle restoration and the list goes on.
I spent a few years working as the Joiner for a local VW conversion company, building and designing their kits and being a major contributor on all aspects of their latest design improvements. There I learnt a lot of tricks of the trade while styling out a couple of their clients vans.
I built my first van conversion, a Mercedes 407d, 20 years ago which i traveled and lived in for many years.
Six years ago I took on a new project, a slight upgrade to a classic 30' Bristol Leyland coach, which is being revamped into a motor home. So now i can get away for time out with my family in comfort.
I've now started creating unique caravans when I'm not working on clients vans.
So with a love of small spaces and a challenge, setting up as a van conversion business was the right way to go.

Another van just finished. It came in for changes and redesign as it was very poorly laid out before ( ill post some before photos soon) i reused the cooker unit and the small one to the left of it. I removed the old bed to replace with a decent length bed now running length ways that now has lots of accessible storage underneath. built new kitchen units and shelves that were fitted after i carpeted all the walls and panels and re-hung the curtains. this worked out a lot better then expected and now its a very cozy and practical van.

Had a trip to Brighton this weekend to re-canvas this little caravan, only to find the replacement canvas was to small. So instead I spent it adding some extras to the inside. copper work, cupboard, small table and a larger self supporting sliding table. I’ll be returning again when the new new canvas has been sorted. Bonus another weekend in Brighton. 👍

Something a little bit different I’m working on at the moment, here at Drifters conversations workshop.
Phase one completed a couple of weeks ago and then this van want of to France for two weeks. Phase two just completed consisting of some long days of work, and now it’s off again for another holiday. It will be back in October for the final top unit to go at the back of the the work top. This is a very special build.

Kitchen unit for a vwT5 I’ve built this week.
New project in the yard at the moment. Hardwood floor fitted and finished, so happy with the way it looks. now it's ready for the units that are being built in the workshop.
I've completed a batch of lichtenberg pictures, these will probably be the only ones i'll finish before christmas, as i have a large commissioned project on which is taking all of my time. so if you're interested get down to Phoenix Aberystwyth or get in touch with me. Lichtenburg is a technique which uses 15,000 volts of electricity to burn lightning patterns into the wood.
