To honour Inventors Day this week we would like to give a mention to these gentleman ………for MRI :- Isador Rabi, Felix Bloch, Edward Purcell, Paul Lauterbur , Sir Peter Mansfield and Raymond Damadian.
During the first half of the 20th Century Isador Rabi, Felix Bloch, and Edward Purcell described the NMR phenomenon; but it was the next generation of scientists in the 1970's who discovered how to create images from the NMR signal. Primary credit (and the Nobel Prize) for M...R imaging was awarded to Sir Peter Mansfield and Paul Lauterbur. However, Raymond Damadian must also be recognized for his innovation and construction of the first full-body human MR scanner. Paul Lauterbur (1909-2007), a chemist working at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, published the first true MR image in Nature in March, 1973.
Also in 1973, Peter Mansfield (1933-2017), a physicist working at the University of Nottingham, demonstrated how a linear field gradient could be used to localize the NMR signal on a slice-by-slice basis.
Later in the decade, Mansfield and his collaborator, Andrew Maudsley, further refined this method into a line-scan technique, producing the first image of a human body part, a finger, in 1977.
While Lauterbur and Mansfield were basic scientists, Raymond V. Damadian (b. 1936) was a physician, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the State University of New York - Brooklyn (Downstate). He looked at NMR from a different and original perspective — as a phenomenon that might be used to probe the body and diagnose human disease. Damadian and his team set out to build such a device which was named "Indomitable." By mid-summer, 1977, the first whole-body MR images were being produced, including the famous one shown below of his assistant's chest.
Thank-you all :)

Each year on 25 January we celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day, or 'Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen'.
Dwynwen was Wales' patron saint of lovers, and this day is the Welsh equivalent to St Valentine's Day. However, we are a romantic country, and also celebrate St Valentine’s day on 14 February!
... The story of Dwynwen dates back to the 5th century, when Dwynwen fell in love with a Prince called Maelon Dafodrill. Her father, Brychan Brycheiniog, was determined that she would marry another man. Dwynwen was devastated that she couldn’t marry her true love. She begged God to make her forget about Maelon. An angel visited Dwynwen and gave her a potion. The potion was supposed to make her have no memory of Maelon and turned him into a block of ice. Dwynwen was then granted three wishes. Firstly she wished for Maelon to be thawed, secondly that God meet the hopes and dreams of true lovers and thirdly she wished that she would never marry. Dwynwen devoted the rest of life to God’s service, founding a convent on the island of Llanddwyn, north west Wales. You can still see the remains of the church on the island today. On the island there is a well where, according to legend, a sacred fish swims. It is said that the fish can predict the happiness of relationships. Visitors still go to the well today, hoping that the water will boil, meaning that love and good luck will follow them.

As it is National Obesity Awareness Week we encourage all to follow a healthy and happy life style.
Obesity is a medical condition that occurs when an individual carries excess weight or body fat that might affect their health. It can lead to many serious health conditions that are potentially life-threatening, including:
... - Type 2 diabetes - Coronary heart disease - Stroke - Bowel, pancreatic, kidney, liver and stomach cancer.
As well as the serious health conditions mentioned above, obesity can also affect a person’s quality of life and their relationships with family and friends. This can lead to psychological issues such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.
We are fortunate enough here at ESC Cardiff to not be confined to a tube configuration for our MRI scanner. We are therefore in a position to be able to offer appointment slots to those bariatric individuals who are unsuitable for the dimensions of a conventional scanner bore. We have a variety of scanner coils to fit people of all shapes and sizes with our scanner also offering flexibility with regards to positioning too.
Why not give us a call on 02920 731654 , we are happy to answer any queries you may have regarding getting an MRI scan with us.

Paget's disease of the bone is a common, chronic bone disorder characterised by excessive abnormal bone remodelling. The classically described radiological appearances are expanded bone with a coarsened trabecular pattern. The pelvis, spine, skull, and proximal long bones are most frequently affected.
Paget's disease is a relatively common condition in the elderly population and is not uncommonly seen as an incidental finding on imaging studies, including magnetic resonance i...maging (MRI). ... MRI can also be used to investigate the various complications of Paget's disease, particularly sarcomatous degeneration.
The Paget’s Association has declared the 11th January to be International Paget’s Awareness Day.
NEW CLINICAL GUIDELINE: In order to ensure that Paget’s is diagnosed and managed well, the Paget’s Association are launching the new clinical Paget's Guideline on the 11th January. Paget’s Patient Passport: To aid communication across the health care system, the Charity has also launched a Paget’s Passport, which is a patient held record to help improve communication between healthcare professionals.
We may well be able to assist you if you ever require an MRI scan due to the complications of this condition. Just give us a call******* Cardiff 02920 731654*********

Having had a really bad shoulder since March this year- I though the only way forward was to have an MRI scan to find out exactly what is wrong! But being very claustrophobic this was something I thought I could never have. UNTIL I found the European Scanning Centre in Cardiff.

Their MRI scanner is the only Non-Claustrophobic open MRI in Wales.

They got me an appointment within 2 days. On arrival I was greeted by Nicola the receptionist to a very grand reception area, the deco was amazing and she made me feel at ease and made me very comfortable..

My husband and my father was with me and they were also made very welcome. They were offered a coffee while they waited for me.

I was taken the the Scanning room by Carol Ann which again I was made to feel at ease, I was explained in detail what was going to happen and the scan went ahead with no trouble. I was kept informed at all times. I was insured that my results would be with my doctor within 24 hours.

I'd like the thank Nicola- Carol Ann -Mel for everyone they did for me, and would definitely recommend anyone to go to this Centre.

It's a week now since I went to the centre and as they promised my results were with my doctor within 24 hours. What a great service.

Well done to all concerned.

Lovely staff, who couldn't be more helpful! From the minute the receptionist phoned me to arrange appointment, to the minute we walked out the door I felt very well taken care of. The scanning ladies were so helpful in accommodating me with my body twitching and not wanting to keep still, which I was quite apprehensive about but they were very patient with me and made adaptions to get the best pictures, I can not recommend them highly enough! Thank you ladies.. 😊

I was told that I needed an MRI scan which, because I'm so claustrophobic, scared the life out of me, so I looked around and discovered that they had an open MRI scanner at ESC Cardiff. I contacted them straight away and they were able to fit me in within 2 days which, if you're as anxious as I am, was good news. I attended last Wednesday and here's what happened to me then and since.

The place is quite unassuming from the outside, and pretty easy to miss, but inside it's really nice – all green and relaxing, with nice music and an absolutely beautiful smell! - and the 4 members of staff that I met were lovely. It's difficult to single out any individual because they were all brilliant but one of the radiographers, I think it was Carol Ann, who looked after me and my wife before, during and after the scanning, really couldn't have been any nicer or have done any more to put us at ease.

The thought of getting in to an enclosed MRI scanner terrified me. I was pretty sure that an open scanner like the one at ESC Cardiff would be better – that's why I booked to go there – but I never thought it would be as unintimidating as it turned out to be. Even though the scanning suite didn't appear to have any windows, they have some really clever images on the walls and ceiling which make it feel light and airy. And when they introduced me to the scanner it was a relief to discover that it wasn't that big or scary. My wife was also able to come into the scanning suite with me, and sit right by my feet, so that helped things.

I knew that the top of the scanner was open but, as I had to have a head scan, and as I knew that my head would need to be towards the centre of the scanner, I though it would still feel enclosed. When I was in position, though, all I could really see was the ceiling. If I turned my eyes to the side I could see the scanner itself but it certainly didn't dominate the view or make me feel claustrophobic at all.

As I was having a head scan I'd read that I'd have to have a coil over my face, which looks a bit like an American footballers head-guard. I was pretty nervous about this but, again, the bit that they put in front of your face is so open that it felt fine.

It's difficult to be sure how long the scans took but I would guess that it was about 25 minutes, and during the whole process the radiographers kept talking to me through the earphones that they provide, telling me how long each scan was going to be. I found this really helpful.

I had read that enclosed MRI scanners could be really noisy and that open ones were much quieter, but I still didn't know what to expect. The scanner at Cardiff didn't seem that quiet, but neither was it that loud. Each scan seemed to make a different sound and these ranged from a kind of rumble to a sort of rhythmic percussive sound. Some of the sounds were quite soothing and I was relieved to discover that there were no sudden bangs or clashes.

After the scan I had to wait about 20 minutes for the radiographers to prepare a disc for me to take away, which I assume contained the scan images (I haven't looked at them because the last thing I want to see is the inside of my head!), during which time they gave us tea and biscuits.

From the website, I thought that the final report would then be available within 24 hours and I'd prepared myself for this. My results took just under 48 hours, though, which, even though that's still pretty quick, did cause me some anxiety. In all fairness, though, the receptionists at Cardiff were incredibly helpful and did everything that they could to get them to me as quickly as possible. I'm pretty sure the website says that if you need your scan results very quickly, have a chat to them about this and, if you're as anxious as I am, it might be worth doing this.

So, overall, what do I think? Well, I've never had an enclosed MRI so I can't make a direct comparison between that and the one at Cardiff. What I can say, though, is that whereas they'd have to knock me out to get me into an enclosed scanner, I'd happily be scanned by the team at Cardiff any day of the week. Also, even though the scan itself is the important bit, the staff and the environment at Cardiff go a long, long way to making what, for me, would be a traumatic event, a relatively comfortable one.

Highly recommended, staff friendly and welcoming, explained process, pleasant surrounding.

User

Friendly, polite and professional staff that put me at ease from the minute I arrived. I am extremely claustrophobic and suffer with numerous anxieties but managed the MRI with only a few tears with the help of Carol-Ann. Would highly recommend their services. A completely different experience to one I had at a previous hospital.

User

As someone who is very claustrophobic and unable to tolerate the standard tube MRI, this scanner is a whole new world. The staff are exceptional. During scans you are kept informed at every stage. Time goes by quickly, you can listen to music or watch television. Highly recommended.

Thanks to all of you that helped me today

User

After feeling very very nervous about having the scan I was instantly put at ease when I spoke to the very nice lady on the reception who explained everything to me and when the time came for the scan they were very patient and understanding. It took about 3hrs to do all that was required but that did include breaks. The whole experience made me feel at ease which was down to the staff and the environment .thank you very much .
