Tiny cosy and characterful bistro - good breakfast and good friendly service

Very disappointing, have eaten in Garlands before always having one of their excellent sandwiches - excellent until today, that is. My girlfriend and I both had chicken sandwiches with tomato chutney and parmisan. It was more chutney than anything , what bits of chicken present in it was fairly inedible - hard and tasteless. The parmisan cheese was more like a thin slice of stale cheddar - unpleasant. At least the bread was fresh. The tea, unfortnunately, was almost too weak to come out of the pot.

The service was farily tardy too - although the place was full when we arrived, just after 1-45, it was almost empty when we were waiting for our food - a wait of over 15 minutes. How long does it take to prepare a sandwich? The waitress who served us ended up being preoccupied interviewing someone for a job, not really an appropriate time to do it I would have thought.

The toilet looked dirty and the walls where we were sitting - where food is brought up and the toilet accessed - looked shabby and grubby. I noticed the waitress carrying food for other people while at the same time holding what looked like buckets for cleaning. This place may have hygiene issues - the three rating looked a bit generous from what I could see.

When asked if everything was okay on finishing I said no, it was very disappointing adding that in the past sandwiches have very good but what they served today was poor. Her response of the place being currently short staffed didn't convince - the chef was hardly run off his feet at the time we were there. If our experiences are anything to go by it won't be shortages of staff that'll be the problem; it'll be shortage of customers.

A couple of minor criticisms first, while the place has bags of character and charm, everything feels a little dilapidated; dirty crockery and rickety tables. However, there is nothing that would put me off the food, this is one of the best places to grab some breakfast in Cardiff. Try the eggs Blackstone.

Absolutely lovely food and very nice service in a quite and quaint location

£33.00 for pancakes for four people, that tasted like cardboard. I have no doubts they were taken out of a packet and then served cold. Nowhere near acceptable. This is the most basic cuisine which is very easy to prepare fresh. There is no excuse for such poor food.

Yum! Lovely breakfast in nice oldy worldy cafe in one if Cardiffs great little arcades. Very friendly and helpful staff. Generous offerings!

Quaint little place, I enjoyed my breakfast but it wasn't exceptional. My husband wasn't keen on their eggs and I thought the skins of the sausage was a bit tough.

I like the food at Garlands, it's a cosy little cafe with a great menu of breakfast options. Because it's so small, when it's busy service can be slow, but it's worth the wait.

Stopped here for breakfast, or as Garlands call it, a "Shirley Bassey" and all I can say is wow. Pretty much everything you would expect from a full breakfast, with an added bonus of white pudding. Very good quality food, great friendly and prompt service, will definitely be back again. Just what I needed before a long day of shopping in Cardiff.
