Following the Prime Minister’s Statement on Monday evening 23rd March, Greenough & Sons Roofing, along with most other construction-based companies of our nature took the decision to suspend all our activities on sites for the following day, Tuesday 24th March.
This was because the information was not clear to us as to whether we should be exposing our workforce and the wider community to unnecessary risk of spreading or catching the Covid-19 virus during this emergency.
With... no advice specific to the construction industry our interpretation of the statement was that we were to stay home unless our roofing work was considered essential.
All our current work we would interpret as non-essential projects such as general housing schemes and non-essential government owned properties such as libraries.
On Tuesday 24th March we spent the day attempting to gain clarity as to what the Prime Ministers statement was going to mean for businesses such as ours and the wider construction industry. We were unable to gain any definitive guidance from government bodies, industry bodies or trade associations as to whether they considered it essential for our workforce to maintain production given that is impossible to carry out our nature of work and abide by the ‘2-metre’ rule. In the absence of absolute guidance, we looked to our industry partners such as national builders’ merchants and other companies working in construction.
Now on the morning of 25th March we have been informed by most of our customers including ADRA, Westdale Services Ltd, R L Davies & Son Ltd and various private customers that they are ‘locking down’ sites except for emergencies. Furthermore, we have been informed that most of our main suppliers such as Travis Perkins, Burlington Slate, Huws Gray and Jewson are closing their doors until further notice.
With all the above in mind we consider it is now impossible for this company to continue normal trading and we must take immediate steps to furlough our workforce in accordance with government advice.
During this period of non-production, we wish to confirm that the company remains open for all financial purposes and the management staff remain 100% employed. We will be tendering for future work and we remain at your service as far as possible.
All of us at Greenough & Sons Roofing wish you the very best during this difficult period and hope you and your family remain safe and healthy.
