Torfaen residents are being reminded to keep their homes secure during warm weather, following an increase in reported burglaries over the past week.
Offences were recorded in the Ty Canol, Fairwater and Coed Eva areas of the borough between the evening of Wednesday, 25th July, and the following morning. Officers believe unsecured windows and doors could have contributed.
Inspector Phil O’Connor said: “We have had a cooler and wet spell over the weekend, but the warm weather ...is likely to return. We recognise that many residents will have their windows and doors open. While this is understandable, but we would urge members of the public not to leave these unattended.
“If you are in your garden make sure that windows and doors at the front of the house are secure, or if you go out, please make sure that they are all closed and secure. Sadly, it only takes an opportunist thief seconds to access your home through an open window.
“Also, if you see anyone acting suspiciously please call us.”
Anyone with information or concerns about burglaries in Torfaen can call Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Gwent Police are supporting the World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2018...
World Day against Trafficking in Persons is held on July 30th 2018, and is an annual event. People trafficking and modern day slavery is a massive worldwide problem with very few countries immune to human trafficking, and the annual event by the United Nations aims to raise awareness and increase prevention.
Thousands of men, women and children end up in the hands of traffickers every year, often... through being tricked and mislead to believe that they are being taken to work that will make their family better off, or through force, kidnap, or even through very poor families selling children in order to survive.
Detective Sergeant Mandi Venn said, ‘We are happy to support this day and any awareness raised about this serious issue is a positive thing which can help to identify victims and protect them.
‘Trafficked people are forced to work, often doing hard labour or prostitution, for no reward, and usually have their identity and documents removed from them and are warned of terrible punishments if they escape, and often they are taken to unfamiliar countries where they don’t know the language and have no way of getting help.
‘UK victims of Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking are frequently vulnerable in terms of homelessness or financial difficulty. Other difficult factors can include lack of support from family, mental illness and dependency on drugs or alcohol which can act as a means of control for a perpetrator.
‘In Gwent Police, we are working hard to tackle this serious issue and we now have a dedicated team of officers who work to combat human trafficking and Modern Day Slavery.
‘The dedicated team work closely with partner agencies including local authorities, Barnardos, New Pathways, Salvation Army, BAWSO, NSPCC, Immigration and the Border Agency. Their joint work includes identifying any areas for forced labour and exploitation which can include agriculture, construction, hospitality, manufacturing and car washes.
‘The Modern Day Slavery team have also provided training for all frontline Gwent Police staff to ensure they recognise the signs which could indicate someone may be a victim of Modern Day Slavery and Human Trafficking. The training also includes guidance on the appropriate referrals needed to partner organisations in order to provide the victim with support. ‘The team are able to provide specialist support for investigations, ensuring victims are identified, supported and protected.’
If you have concerns about Modern Day Slavery or Human Trafficking, please call 101. You can also contact the Modern Slavery Helpline by calling 08000 121 700 or visit their website www.modernslaveryhelpline.org
