Dear Friends,
As you may have seen from the front page of the Chronicle last week (“Could it be the last curtain for theatre?”), Gwent Theatre is facing closure as a result of the doubling of charges by MCC for our occupancy of the Drama Centre on Pen-y-Pound. But this is not just a threat to Gwent Theatre and its offspring, Gwent Young People’s Theatre, the oldest youth theatre in Wales.
The Drama Centre, including the Melville Theatre, is also a welcoming and low cost spa...ce for a large and growing number of community groups in Abergavenny – from the Abergavenny Film Society to the Suitcase Theatre for adults, the Rareseed Theatre for young people, and the People First group for adults with learning difficulties. It is also home to Harry Iles iconic wood sculptures, and an amazing venue for art exhibits, musical performances, jazz, cabaret, story telling, singing, debate and all the other activities that make our cultural life what it is.
If MCC insists on forcing out Gwent Theatre, the result will be that the Drama Centre – including the Melville Theatre – will no longer be accessible to film fans, theatre goers, music lovers, community groups and local organisations in one of the best studio theatres in Wales.
That’s why Gwent Theatre is calling a public meeting this Saturday for existing and potential users of the Drama Centre who are opposed to this act of vandalism by MCC and would like to see the Drama Centre remain open for use by community groups in Abergavenny and beyond.
The meeting begins at 2pm on Saturday November 15th and we would welcome your participation.
We think it’s not too late to save the Melville Theatre for community use. But Gwent Theatre can’t do it on its own. We invite you to step forward, join with us, and together make the case to save this precious community asset.
Please forward this email to anyone you know who would like to help save the Drama Centre.
All my best.
Hamish.
