Olwen rebuild update...
Work on the frames is progressing at a pace finally. All old paint and filth being removed back to bare metal and degreased then as weather permits is receiving a coat of red oxide.
... Parts of the motion and the connecting rods being removed, cleaned and a coat of red oxide applied. Motion bearings are being cleaned and examined and measured to see if any machining is required.
A few places on the running board have been identified as being rotted and need cutting out and replacing. A couple of regular volunteers are slowly working through the pile of Olwen parts that have been gathered up, and are being cleaned, wire brushed and given a coat of red oxide.
No more work will be undertaken on the boiler until the rest of the Loco is almost ready for re assembly. If we complete the boiler and have it tested then the 10 yearly ticket will gradually tick away without getting any use out of it. Donations of Red Oxide and Paint brushes always required.
Tony Smith has taken over as Co-ordinator of this project. Anyone wishing to assist getting Olwen back into steam, please contact Tony or Steven.

What a wonderful experience we had ona sunday lunch steam day.

The staff are simply wonderful, so friendly, with great humour, and superb customer care.

The four course lunch is served at a liesurely pace, and nothing is too much trouble. Have to pay special compliments to the chef, the food quality is second to none, and I'm sure the support volunteers give him first class assistance.

They are so proud of their standards, that customers are positively encouraged to tour the kitchens afterwards.

Highly recommend this experience for the dining and the steam experience.

We visited last weekend for the Santa Train. It was busy but very well run and organised. We parked in the overflow car park and got straight on to the shuttle bus back to the station - no waiting around. After the train ride to the next station we went along to the large marquee which has activities for the children and santa's grotto. We went straight to see santa which was again organised very well and there was enough to entertain the children before it was their turn. The santa was very good, spent time talking with the children and the gifts were very well thought out and appropriate for the ages (girls 1,6,7). This was our first trip to Gwili and we all enjoyed. Would recommend to others.

Took our granddaughter to see Father Christmas. She and we loved it. Some elements were a little rough around the edges but only if you were hyper critical.

The volunteers running the event were fabulous. The train brilliant. The marquee area at destination provided plenty to see and do and a very reasonably priced cafe.

The Santa experience was really well done and grotto area well planned. Santa was excellent, friendly and professional.

We will use the railway again for other events and wonder why it took so long for our first visit.

Well done Gwili Railway volunteers.

User

This was our second visit to Gwili on Sunday 17th with our 4 year old Grandson it is a very well organised event from start to finish , Goodybag for the children , sherry and mince pies for the Adults , we didnt have to cue for long for santa before you go in the Elf is brilliant then santa himself is very good does not hurry you a very good gift for a 4 year old how loves cars, we then sat down for a nice burger, he had his face painted very professionally , the only dissapointment the man who should have turned up to do the bouncy castle didnt turn up other than that very enjoyable day.

Super little heritage line in very picturesque setting. Thanks to John the signalman, for an excellent historical and technical resumé, to Tony (I think- the man from Sapcote!) in the booking office, and all the other volunteers. Keep up your excellent work.

Lovely and beautiful Welsh steam railway, everyone who works or volunteers there are wonderful professionals. We loved the experience, my daughters really enjoyed visiting Royal Mail travelling post office! The train ride was fantastic! Highly recommended!

User

It was a quiet day when I visited and they were running the DMU rather than steam so I was able to grab the front seat behind the driver for the whole journey in both directions for a great view of the line.

All staff and volunteers were friendly and happy to chat about the history, current operations and future plans for the line. I really enjoyed my time there, finishing up with a nice cuppa in the cafe.
