Every show at the Harlequin finishes with a selection of speciality puppets in "MARIONETTE CABARET" where the audience see how the strings are pulled as well as the puppet's performance. This requires great skill on the part of the puppeteer since there is no scenery or special lighting to enhance the presentation. This part of the show does fascinate the children but is also, generally, the most popular with the adults who can appreciate the skill involved.

Smaller audiences this week, just a few families each day. This is as expected since the children in Wales don't break up for their Half Term until next week. But families do travel from Merseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and the the Midlands, and many of my regulars are children from England who come to visit Grandparents for their half term holidays. The English school holidays are not always in sync with those here in Wales. Our season runs until March 2nd and the hour and a... half plus performance is proving very popular with the children, but also with the adults too. The Play, "A Very Silly King and the Wrong Wife" is funny, with very witty dialogue. The American poet who wrote the play, Edna St Vincent Millay, was an early campaigner for Women's Rights. This is of no concern to the children but may add an extra layer of humour for the grown-ups. "The Little Ballet of the Handkerchief Princess" is a musical fantasy which stretches the imaginations of the children with a very unusual production where all the characters are handkerchiefs and the story without words is nevertheless readily understood. The children "get it!" The adults really appreciate the skill in Marionette Cabaret while the children's favourite is probably the Magic Trick section where they all want to help Mr Bimbamboozle and get a magic sticker and a "Polilop" and a "Squirtificate". The show runs until Saturday March 2nd with a show each day at 3pm. Booking details, prices and full information on http://puppetshow.info or telephone 01492 548166 to reserve seats or get information. The Hralequin Puppet THeatre is on the seafront at Rhos-on-Sea, LL284EP Will we see you there?

FEBRUARY HALF TERM TREAT
As well as the ballet fantasy, The Little Ballet of the Handkerchief Princess the February Half Term Treat at The Harlequin Puppet Theatre includes the funny puppet play written especially for puppets, The Silly King and the Wrong Wife.
This rather old fashioned fairy story was written by an American lady called Edna St. Vincent Millay. It was originally called Two Slatterns and a King but since we realised very few people know what the word slattern ...means we thought it deserved a new title.
The King really is silly. First he says he’ll never ever get married, then completely changes his mind and goes looking for a wife. His idea of a wife is someone who is clean and neat and tidy, and good at washing clothes and cleaning palaces and cooking meals and making beds and …. do you think he’s really looking for a wife? It sounds more like a servant doesn’t it?
Anyway he goes about it in completely the wrong way, and he’s bossy too! Well he gets his deserts. There’s mischievious demon called Chance, and he can make everything go wrong, and he does.
The King rejects Mistress Tidy, who is having a very difficult day, but is very impressed by Mistress Slut.
The King thinks he has been so clever and found the perfect wife to be his slave, but in the end it looks like he’s the one who gets bossed around and probably has to do the washing up!
This story was written with adults as much in mind as children. The moral of the tale is pretty universal but the language aimed at adults and older children would seem a challenge for the little ones. Nevertheless they usually listen attentively and are amused by the situation of the King being fooled, while the adults will probably enjoy the poetic and witty dialogue.

Mr Bimbamboozle's Family Christmas Show at The Harlequin Puppet Theatre has become something of a tradition with familes, especially those with young children, coming from all over North Wales, Cheshire, Merseyside and beyond to enjoy this mix of puppets, audience participation and magic. The setting, Britain's only theatre built especially for puppets, is unique and the show itself has an old fashioned charm which children warm to and grandparents recall. This year's theme i...s the pantomime story of Aladdin told on the Marionette Stage, and the show also includes Festive Magic with Mr Bimbamboozle and lotss of help from the Children. Traditionally the show ends with a special Puppet Cabaret where the audience are fascinated to see just how the strings are pulled. Prices are very reasonable for an hour and a half of skilfull entertainment. Adults £6.50, Children or Senior Citizens £5.50. Seats bookable at http:// puppetshow.info or telephone 01492 548166
