There is usually a correlation between confidence and calmness. If you feel confident about a task then you will likely feel calm about doing it. When you feel less confident you are more likely to be stressed or nervous. Trying to remain calm, even when you're under stress and pressure, will tend to make you feel more confident. To do this it is useful to learn how to relax. Learn at least one relaxation technique that works for you and that you can use if you're feeling str...essed. Vicki Keith is the most successful marathon swimmer in the history of the sport, holding an unprecedented sixteen world records. Her most recognized accomplishments include becoming the first person to swim across all five Great Lakes in 1988 and for being the only person to complete the 104 km double crossing of Lake Ontario.
Vicki has coached 15 athletes with a disability to the national level and two athletes to the international level in comp...etitive swimming, 6 athletes to world records in marathon swimming, and an athlete with a disability to the podium in triathlon on the world stage.

It is often not the sport per se that teaches life skills (as these could be learnt through other hobbies), but it is the sport experience that enables a young person to transfer what they learn in one environment and transfer in to other areas of their life, such as school, at home, and even in the workplace as they get older.
