🌍 “Where Wales Welcomes the World"

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod Description

For one week in July each year, the small Welsh town is descended upon by the world. During the day, international musicians and dancers compete in over 20 high quality competitions. Each evening the best and most colourful competitors share the stage in renowned concerts given by professional artists, many of whom started their careers in Llangollen.

Placido Domingo acknowledges that his first professional experience in the United Kingdon was at the 1968 International Eisteddfod, and in 1955 Luciano Pavarotti competed with his father in the male voice choir competition with others from their home town of Modena. The choir won their section, and Pavarotti returned for a spectacular concert in 1995. Kiri Te Kanawa, Lesley Garrett, Bryn Terfel, Dennis O'Neil, Jools Holland, Status Quo, UB40, James Galway, Montserrat Caballe, Reverend and The Makers, and the Manic Street Preachers are among the musical stars that have appeared in the final Sunday Evening Concert.

This #InternationalFriendshipDay, we are honoring relationships that have been established over the past 70 years, highlighting the importance of friendship by celebrating the 800 volunteers who provide crucial support throughout the week-long event.
Chairman, Rhys Davies, says "It is through the camaraderie of friendship that our festival is able to thrive; between volunteers, participants and indeed the audience. By accumulating these bonds, we contribute to the aims of the United Nations in developing strong ties of trust which are needed to achieve peace and lasting stability.”

Our Chairman, Dr Rhys Davies, talks to Made in Liverpool TV, about the history of the Llangollen Eisteddfod and the importance of the volunteers and locals in supporting the event. Watch the short clip online here:

Wonderful relaxed event - a choice of food from around the globe with a variety of music on different stages. Blown away by the evening concert from Alfie Boe.

User

Wonderful evening all the volunteers and staff very helpful and pleasant and a wonderful relaxing atmosphere we really enjoyed ourselves looking forward to the next time

User

What an amazing event. I brought my choir for the first time and was blown away. Why haven't I been before? Such a truly joyous event and such high quality. And everyone was so welcoming. Will be back!!! Thank you to everyone who made this happen.

User

What a week. A feast for the eyes, ears and soul. Thoroughly recommend.

User

What a brilliant day we had on Saturday, sunshine, live music, dancing, culture, colour, and a whole world of joyful, friendly, happy people all together in one beautiful place, bought tears to my eyes & made my soul smile :). Add food for every taste imaginable and refreshments to temp, over indulgence was the result. We had tickets for the pavillion on Saturday night, which we enjoyed, the only downside for me were The Overtones, bit cheesy, not my thing at all. Well done Llangollen Eisteddfod, we will be back next year.

User

We are perpetually in awe about this Eisteddfod and what you guys achieve. Every year our eyes and ears are challenged by something new and this year's Choir of the World finale was amazing. We'd like to see a return to the themed days on the Maes (Folk Friday, etc) but that's a very minor point. Should add that the West Side Story performance s on the outdoor stage were amazing. One other thing - the food offer on the Maes is amazing. Respect to everyone!

User

My wife and her friend and I went to see the choirs. We listened to 33 during the day from all over the world. Mixed, male voice and open category. The weather was beautiful but too hot. A really wonderful day. All winners justified. Will need to book a cottage and stay the week next year and see a lot more. One day is not enough.

User

My wife Eryl and I had a fantastic time at the International Music Eisteddfod. It was wonderful to see so many happy faces, and people from all parts of the world getting along with one another. Highly entertaining and in one of the most beautiful parts of Wales. I'd recommend it for everyone - we are certainly going again and again.

User

My husband and I had an excellent couple of days there with both our children taking part in the different choirs. There was plenty of different types of food places available and lovely stalls to browse around. The main arena itself was beautifully decorated with colourful flowers. Also there were lots of very talented people/groups from all over the world who took part. Llangollen is a beautiful place to visit.

User

Loved everything about the Sunday Festival. The Marshals were friendly, efficient & everywhere to help. Ground appeared level on the paths for wheelchair access. The venue had lots of seating inside & out. Parking & leaving was easy. Plenty of toilets with paper, soap & running water well stocked. The entertainment was fantastic both in the outside venues & main pavilion. Great mix of music & musicians. Variety of food choices to suit most people. Access to free drinking water if required but also good range of drinks on sale including alcoholic & non. The atmosphere was great, it’s set in a very picturesque location and the areas weren’t so packed with people that you had pleasure being there.

User

Llanfest 2017 was amazing!! So many great bands to watch! Reverend and the makers were excellent and the Manic Street Preachers were amazing! Haven’t got one complaint about our day! Just need to see who’s doing Llanfest this year!

User

It was a good day, all participants around the world gave their fantastic performance in singing and dancing, plenty of food and drinks stalls, souvenir shops plus an evening with Van Morrison. To all organisers, thumbs-up for doing a great job, see you again next year

User

I thoroughly enjoyed my day - I only went because a friend of mine wanted to see Stellenbosch University Choir, and Tring Park were also performing. In the event it was a splendid day with a truly uplifting international feel to it. Parking was easy and free, and the whole experience makes me want to go again. The Headteacher of the local school should be congratulated on the conduct of the pupils, who did a superb job as ushers.

User

Fantastic Sunday had a fab day lots of entertainment and food well impressed with the free water then on to the night in the pavilion top loader holsters and the one I was there for kiaser cheifs fantastic loved it all

User

Brilliant day for all the family my kids loved the circus skills and watching all dancers and choirs was amazing

User

An awesome festival for the whole world, it knows how to attract the finest musicians and the most talented dancers. No wonder they are much loved; even the parades are outstanding and fun

User

All the bands were fantastic and I really enjoyed it but having paid ÂŁ110 for our 2 tickets I thought it was a bit over the top that no drinks whatsoever were allowed pass the entrance gate. We were prepared to purchase our food, drinks and memorabilia for the day there but we had brought bottles of water and a small hip flask of brandy for our journey home which we had to empty out before security would let us in. I hope they relax these rules for next time as this is a really enjoyable event.

A very colourful, enjoyable, week of entertainment for the family. People from all nations visit the beautiful vale of Llangollen to compete in song and dance. Over the years, there have been changes, and although tradition is still proudly shared, we have had various pop stars and groups thrown into the mix. Where I wouldn`t say it is quite Glastonbury, there is a certain feel which could amount to this when various groups entertain around the field. It is safe to say that the entertainment and experience will broaden your horizons, and from nine to ninety there is something to suit everyone. About the field there are various stalls that sell everything from clothing to garden furniture, and your taste buds will be exited by food from India, to locally made ice-cream. This year has been extra special in that we have enjoyed wall to wall sunshine, but even if the sun doesn`t shine, the colours of the costumes, the smiles on people`s faces, and the high spirits of the visitors just makes this week something really special.

User

Went to see Van Morrison which was great. However the rest is so amateurish. Poor signage, PA (its a music festival!), stalls and 1950s toilets. Its a poor second to the average village fete.
