Mediccom Healthcare Society

Mediccom is a society made by a group of sixth form students coming together to provide a healthcare working experience to aspiring doctors from schools around Wales. We are made to bring schools together to work on a project to present in front of a large, city-wide audience in front of a host of medical professionals, teachers and university students. Within each school pupils work in PBL (Problem Based Learning) groups to create presentations based on scientific and ethical topics that will be covered in university. The best presentation from each school is selected to be presented in front of a judging panel of medical experts. We encourage all attendants to donate to a medical charity that corresponds to the topic of the session. We feel that there are so many debilitating health conditions that the general public do not know enough about. Such health problems require funding for research, staffing etc and there are multiple charities that campaign for medical causes. Donations made during Mediccom events will go towards a medical charity of our choice that is related to the theme of the event. Students from different schools will have the opportunity to make their own group for PBL. Each school will have their own topic to research and bring a new perspective to the event. Students in PBL groups are able to work together in a multidisciplinary team, everyone having a specific task like in a hospital. This encourages students to deal with responsibility and allows for an efficient team. Having planned their presentation, they can create their presentation and present it to a committee member, making sure to cite every source found. The best presentation from each school will have a chance to present at Mediccom with others. These skills will translate nicely into your future UCAS application and be applicable in your professional life.
