Below us lies a valuable metal that people have used for over 8,000 years - lead. Here at Meadow Shaft the lead is deep underground. However, the first mines were up on Eisteddfod and Esclusham Mountains, above Minera, where the lead is at or near the surface

Simon Hughes | Accidents were remarkably few at Minera, considering the hazards. Part of the reason was due to the timberman who kept the mine in good repair. Simon Hughes was employed as a timberman at the Minera City Mine, becoming head timberman in 1908. Simon worked at the mine until it closed in 1915.

Minera limestone is full of crystals. Follow the path beyond the Engine House and search the slope to the left of the path

Wildflowers flourish on the thin limestone soils. Look for the array of orchids in the spring, and throughout the summer, flowers such as knapweed with its purple thistle-like flowers and creeping, yellow Birds Foot Trefoil.

The Clywedog Valley trail runs from Minera Lead Mines to King's Mill.
The River Clwyedog has always been the lifeblood of the valley, watering crops and livestock since early times, powering corn mills and driving industrial machinery.
Huge waterwheels powered the bellows blasting air into the iron furnaces at Bersham, and drove winding and pumping machinery here in the Lead Mines
